Australian golfer Adam Scott<\/a> was on track to shoot his best ever tournament round until a devastating mistake on the 17th hole.<\/p>\n

The 42-year-old Aussie legend was shooting the lights out at TPC River Highlands during the opening round of the Travelers Championship.<\/p>\n

Scott led the field at 9-under after carding an incredible 10 birdies in his first 15 holes, with only one bogey to his name.<\/p>\n

The 2013 Masters<\/a> champion stepped up to the tee on the 17th, needing two more birdies – or an eagle – to card 59 for the first time in his career.<\/p>\n

He put an iron shot off the box to the perfect spot on the fairway, leaving himself a long wedge over water onto the green of the par-4.<\/p>\n

But his second shot fell well short and landed in the drink, forcing Scott to take a drop and hit his fourth shot from the same spot he hit his second.<\/p>\n

"The wind was just moving around a little bit the last few holes between kind of east and northeast and north and no wind, and (it) felt like there was none really when I was hitting," Scott explained after his round.<\/p>\n

"But it came up well short, so maybe got caught in something, because the next shot the same club went 15 yards further. So, yeah, I really don't know.<\/p>\n

"It's a shame, but it's hard to be disappointed with 62."<\/p>\n

He double bogeyed the hole, dropping from first to third on the leaderboard, but then found his 11th birdie on the 18th to finish the day with a 62 8-under.<\/p>\n

It equalled Scott's record round, and his 11 birdies matched the feat he achieved when winning the 2008 Qatar Masters.<\/p>\n

"I think if I made eagle on 15 it (a 59) was really right on," Scott said after his Travelers masterclass.<\/p>\n

"I didn't really (think about it). I was just trying to just keep doing what I was doing out there.<\/p>\n

"It was all going really nicely and I wasn't thinking too much about anything today."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Scott remains well in the hunt for the lion's share of the $30 million purse, sitting third behind Denny McCarthy and Keegan Bradley.<\/p>\n

Scott's best result this season was tied fifth at the Wells Fargo Championship in May. He last won on the PGA Tour at the Genesis Invitational three years ago.<\/p>\n
