Australian great Ian Chappell<\/a> has hit out at critics of Pat Cummins<\/a>' captaincy after his match-winning heroics in the first Test against England.<\/p>\n

Despite all the pre-match talk being about England's tactics and audacious style of play, Chappell was impressed by the way Cummins and Australia stood up to 'Bazball'.<\/p>\n

Cummins played a vital role in the win with knocks of 38 and 44 not out with the bat to go along with second-innings figures of 4-63.<\/p>\n

The 30-year-old's appointment as Test skipper was widely questioned at the time when he was chosen as the successor to Tim Paine, due to Australia's tendency to pick batters as captains as opposed to fast bowlers.<\/p>\n

Chappell said the criticism was nonsense at the time and remains so.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffAnybody who queried how good Cummins would be as a captain because he was a pace bowler obviously hadn't studied his Test career very well," he told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"I think where he's smart is he's shown he'll attack when he thinks it's right, and he obviously thought it was right in that last partnership and it turned out to be the winning move.<\/p>\n

"(World Cup-winning Pakistan captain) \ufeffImran Khan said to be a good captain you've got to understand bowling. Now, who is going to understand a bowler better than a very good bowler?<\/p>\n

"It was no surprise to me at all that Cummins is a good captain."<\/p>\n

Cummins' two knocks were his highest Test scores since his career-best 63 against India in the 2018 Boxing Day Test, and Chappell was full of praise for the way he paced his innings.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"That's where Cummins stood out," he said of the Australian skipper's attacking play.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThat probably swayed the game in Australia's favour and I think by attacking he forced England onto the back foot and they spread the field and Australia were able to capitalise.<\/p>\n

"Once you spread the field in Test cricket you put the odds in your favour. I thought it was a brave move, but it was one that swung the game."<\/p>\n

The second Test gets underway on Wednesday at Lord's.\ufeff<\/p>\n
