Another one of Eddie Jones'<\/a> quirky coaching tactics has come to light in the wake of curious scenes with the Wallabies<\/a> at Coogee Beach.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Rugby World Cup prospects were spotted training on the beach \u2013 practicing mauling and wrestling on the sand<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It was part of a directive from Jones and his new scrum coach Neal Hatley, the English recruit labelling it a "unbelievable opportunity" to work hands-on with the men.<\/p>\n

The scenes evoked not-so-fond memories for James Horwill, who was coached by Jones at the Queensland Reds in 2007.<\/p>\n

"This is classic Eddie stuff," said Horwill on Stan Sport's Rugby Heaven<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I remember back in '07, we used to do a little bit of the mauling there.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"He used to make us maul up and down Ballymore hill, full contact with a camo net over the top, making sure that you stayed just low enough and keep your body height \u2013 him and Alec Evans (assistant coach).\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Full opposition, full line coming down the hill and then you mauling up and every time you didn't make it to the top you had to start again and go back."<\/p>\n

There wasn't much method in Jones' madness, as it turned out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Reds failed to make the playoffs and slumped to 14th \u2013 their worst result in the club's history at the time.<\/p>\n

"It was very hard, particularly with a camo net sitting just above your head," Horwill added.<\/p>\n

"So you had be down, hunched like this. So it was interesting. It didn't actually work that well because we missed the finals."<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Eddie Jones will name his first Wallabies side since taking the reins of the team.<\/p>\n

The Wallabies get their 2023 season underway on July 9 (AEST) against South Africa in Pretoria with its first match of the Rugby Championship.<\/p>\n

They'll then face Argentina's Pumas at Western Sydney Stadium on July 15 before hosting the All Blacks at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on July 29.<\/p>\n

The Bledisloe Cup concludes in Dunedin on August 5.<\/p>\n
