Siya Kolisi remains optimistic he'll be able to lead the Springboks in this year's Rugby World Cup<\/a> despite a knee injury.<\/p>\n

In April, the South African veteran partially tore his ACL<\/a> (anterior cruciate ligament) in a match playing for the Durban-based Sharks against Ireland's Munster in the United Rugby Championship.<\/p>\n

An initial prognosis was that Kolisi might need surgery, which was expected to rule him out of the Rugby World Cup due to a nine-month recovery time.<\/p>\n

Desperate not to miss the forthcoming tournament, Kolisi sought advice from several doctors. Ultimately, he underwent surgery in late April.<\/p>\n

Despite that, the 2019 Rugby World Cup-winning captain said he is progressing well in his recovery.<\/p>\n

Such is his optimism, Kolisi believes he may even be able to contest the warm-up matches in August.<\/p>\n

"I'm feeling good, and my rehabilitation is going well," said Kolisi.<\/p>\n

"I have been working hard to recover as well as possible, and it's great to be able to do so in the team environment.<\/p>\n

"Some of the players have been helping me as well, so I'm taking things day by day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's not a great feeling to be injured, but I have been here before and it's nice to have the support of the coaches and players, as well as the medical and conditioning team, who have been fantastic.<\/p>\n

"I'm progressing each week and I have steadily been able to do new things, so I'm confident with how things are going.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Hopefully, I will be able to play in one or two of the Rugby World Cup warm-up games."<\/p>\n

Kolisi has been with the Jacques Nienaber-led squad in Pretoria as South Africa prepares for the upcoming Rugby Championship.<\/p>\n

The Springboks host the Wallabies on July 9 before heading to New Zealand to face the All Blacks on July 15.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Their Rugby Championship concludes against the Pumas on July 30 in South Africa. They'll then head to Argentina to play a Rugby World Cup warm-up match on August 5.<\/p>\n

Two more warm-up matches will see South Africa play Wales in Cardiff on August 19 and New Zealand in London on August 25.<\/p>\n
