Former Collingwood<\/a> president Eddie McGuire<\/a> says the tribunal's decision to uphold Hawthorn<\/a> captain James Sicily's suspension was "wrong", adding weight to fierce criticism of the AFL's re-designed tackle policies.<\/p>\n

Sicily received a three-match ban following the dangerous tackle that concussed Brisbane Lions star Hugh McCluggage<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Nine's Eddie and Jimmy<\/em> podcast<\/a> McGuire questioned whether there was any "deliberate nature" or "act of malice involved" in Sicily's contact, claiming that the tackle was "not overly strong" and the player was simply "holding a strong, physical, hard, trained athlete from bursting away."<\/p>\n

Geelong legend Jimmy Bartel<\/a> said he understood the confusion surrounding Sicily's tackle as "it did not look like a classic sling tackle," adding that the confusion around the tackle rule is taking away from the game.<\/p>\n

"We just have to be careful that we don't suspend players on slo-motion and then ask (the tribunal) to make decisions based on frame by frame," Bartel said.<\/p>\n

"Come September, we always say this\u2026 this is going to cost someone a premiership," McGuire added.<\/p>\n

Incoming AFL<\/a> CEO Andrew Dillon said he did not "see any confusion" with the rulings, claiming that all "penalties and sanctions are in the right spot."<\/p>\n

Twenty-one players have been suspended in the 2023 season for dangerous conduct charges, with fans focusing on the "30 player tackles on suspension or report," according to Bartel.<\/p>\n

Added McGuire: "You either say biomechanists are going to be used as expert witnesses or if you think they are billy goats you just don't let them come in. The amount of money going into these tribunals\u2026any one who has a football brain could look at these things\u2026 and (decide) football actions, non football actions.<\/p>\n

"(We need to look at) who's trained? Who's coached to tackle lying on the ground, grabbing a bloke who is also trying to twist out of a tackle. Who then has a bloke fall across him and as he falls down he hits his head.<\/p>\n

"I mean c'mon, is that three weeks? He did everything right\u2026 That one is going to sting."<\/p>\n

Siciliy's sanction was influenced by the severe impact grading, which was determined due to McCluggage's concussion, as a result of the AFL's ongoing strategy to reduce head injury incidents.<\/p>\n

Hawthorn argued the involvement of Sicily's teammate Tyler Brockman contributed to the injury, suggesting that without Brockman's involvement the tackle would not have been considered dangerous.<\/p>\n

Hawthorn's appeal to remove the ban was unsuccessful, with the tribunal concluding that "Sicily kept clinging onto McCluggage and kept him rotating," not accepting Brockman's involvement to be a significant contribution to make an "otherwise safe tackle dangerous."<\/p>\n

"Accordingly, we find this was a dangerous tackle."<\/p>\n
