England<\/a> captain Ben Stokes<\/a> said his troops are in "absolute pieces" after their epic two-wicket defeat in the first Ashes<\/a> test at Edgbaston.<\/p>\n

With the Aussies needing 37 to win, Stokes dropped a difficult chance off a Nathan Lyon<\/a> pull shot that could have all but won England the match.<\/p>\n

"Losing sucks," Stokes told the BBC after play. "We always want to win."<\/p>\n

"We are absolutely devastated that we have lost.<\/p>\n

"The lads are up there in absolute pieces, especially (Ollie Robinson) and Broady (Stuart Broad) who put in an unbelievable shift there.<\/p>\n

\"Ben<\/p>\n

"But if that's not attracting people to the game we love then I don't know what will.<\/p>\n

"There are still four games left. Keep following us and we will keep trying to do what we do."<\/p>\n

Stokes will no doubt cop some heat from the English press in the coming days for his now-costly first innings declaration late on day one, but he insists he has "no regrets" over the decision.<\/p>\n

With Joe Root unbeaten on 118, Stokes elected to bowl four overs at Usman Khawaja and David Warner, but the pair got through to stumps unscathed.<\/p>\n

"I thought that was a time to pounce," Stokes said.<\/p>\n

"Who knows, we could have got an extra 40 runs or lost two wickets in two balls. I am not a captain who gets by on what ifs.<\/p>\n

"We were in control of most of the game and managed to produce a result. Obviously we wanted to be on top. We are devastated but that's sport. It is great and an emotional rollercoaster."<\/p>\n

Nor is he going to shy away from playing Bazball \u2013 the aggressive style of cricket that had seen England win 11 of their last 13 Tests heading into Edgbaston.<\/p>\n

"I am not going to change the way I have gone about my cricket because it is the Ashes."<\/p>\n

The second Test gets underway at Lord's on June 28.\ufeff<\/p>\n
