The Aussies hit 6-374 in Sydney last Friday in the series opener, against 8-308.

Batsmen have scored at will, with Australian champion Steve Smith twice reaching a century in 62 balls.

Meanwhile, the likes of Glenn Maxwell and David Warner have teed off, with innovation thrown in among conventional shots. Both men have played something of a hybrid between a switch-hit and a reverse sweep; they haven't reversed their grip on the bat but have flipped their stance at the point of the bowler's delivery.

Chappell is an admirer of the incredible skill required to successfully switch-hit, yet told Wide World of Sports that the practice was unfair and should be illegal.

"I'd prefer to see a contest rather than batting exhibitions," Chappell said.

"The Australian batting has been exceptional. They've made it look pretty easy … particularly Smith and Maxwell, some of the shots he plays are hard to believe.

"[Switch-hitting] is very skillful, some of it's amazingly skillful – but it's not fair.

"How can one side of the game, ie. the bowlers, they have to tell the umpire how they're going to bowl. And yet the batsman, he lines up as a right-hander – I'm the fielding captain, I place the field for the right-hander – and before the ball's been delivered, the batsman becomes a left-hander.

"One of the main reasons why he's becoming a left-hander is so he can take advantage of those field placings. I'd love the administrators who made those laws, I'd love them to explain to me how that's fair.

"I just can't believe the players don't arc-up about it. If I'm captain, I'm going to take the ball myself and I'm going to tell the umpire I'm bowling right-arm over [the wicket], and then I'm going to run in and bowl around.

"Obviously the umpire's going to complain and I'm going to say, 'Well, you stop him (the batsman) doing something I think is totally unfair and I'll stop doing something unfair'. If the administrators are smart enough to change it, then my attitude always was, 'Well, I'll take the law into my own hands'."

https://twitter.com/cricketcomau/status/1333193020267769861?s=20

Chappell said the ICC could easily outlaw blatant switch-hitting.

"It's very simple. Maxwell hit a couple of [switch-hit] shots and Warner did [Sunday] night. All you've got to say is that if the batsman changes the order of his hands or his feet [as the bowler runs in], then it's an illegal shot," Chappell said.

"If the batsman's right-handed and wants to play switch-hit [in advance of the bowler running in], any bowler worth is salt will say, 'Go for your life, mate, I'll take my chances'. But when he completely becomes the opposite-handed batsman to what he faces up as, then it's not fair.

"If he's good enough to do it by excellent footwork or whatever other means he can devise, I don't have a problem with it. But when it's blatantly unfair, it annoys the hell out of me."

Maxwell, true to form, may have given himself enough wiggle-room. He has batted with an extremely open stance, allowing himself to play horizontal bat shots on either side of the wicket without completely switching his feet.

With scores of 63 not out and 45, scoring at a strike rate of well above 200, he has been a nightmare for India. Warner, injured in the second ODI, has made 83 and 69.

While unimpressed with India's bowling attack thus far, Chappell said that the flat wicket in Sydney for the first two ODIs was symptomatic of an ongoing problem.

"I've always thought that the pitches have been a little bit that way in one-day cricket, for a long time," Chappell said.

"The essence of the game, a good game of cricket is where there's a contest. When it becomes just purely and exercise in [batting] statistics, I don't enjoy it too much.

"The problem is, you get a big first-innings score and every now and again it will get run down; South Africa ran down 400 against Australia, it's happened a couple of times. But it's not going to happen very often and once it becomes a bit of a no-contest and the side batting second are out of it, it's not much fun for me to watch and I don't think too many people enjoy it.

"The best games of cricket are always where there's a bit in it for the bowlers and that applies to pretty well any form. If you want to make the pitches pretty flat, OK, T20, I'd maybe accept that. But outside of that, the best games of cricket are when the bowler's got a chance."

Switch-hitting must be banned and pitches livened up to stop ODI matches turning into batting exhibitions, former Australian captain Ian Chappell says.
