Former Australian Test<\/a> captain Ricky Ponting<\/a> has found himself in a verbal stoush with English players more than a decade after retiring from the game.<\/p>\n

Ponting was bizarrely dragged into controversy involving Ollie Robinson's send-off for Usman Khawaja on day three<\/a> \ufeffof the Ashes<\/a> match at Edgbaston.<\/p>\n

Robinson delivered a foul-mouthed spray for Khawaja after bowling him for 141, and was later \ufeffprobed on the fiery incident by several Aussie journalists post-play.<\/p>\n

"We've all seen Ricky Ponting and other Aussies do the same to us," Robinson responded in defence of his actions.<\/p>\n

"Just because the shoe is on the other foot, it's not received well. It's my first home Ashes Test and to get the big wicket was special.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Ponting is in Birmingham to commentate for Sky Sports on the match, and was blindsided by being name dropped in a press conference that had nothing to do with him.<\/p>\n

While he was famously combative as a captain and superstar batter during his playing days, and had many run-ins with England throughout his career, he now works side-by-side with many of his former foes.<\/p>\n

"I was sitting back having some pizza and watching the US Open golf and my phone lit up with what he had to say in his press conference," Ponting told Sky Sports of Robinson's comments.<\/p>\n

"I was a little bit surprised just because it's so long ago. If he had of used one of the current players as an example then fine, but I haven't played for 11 years and probably haven't sledged an Englishman for about 15. He must have a long memory.<\/p>\n

"A lot of this stuff happens in the heat of battle. The only thing I'd say with Ollie is Khawaja was (on) 140, Robinson hasn't looked like getting a wicket all day, and he's just sledged probably the nicest man that's ever walked on the planet.<\/p>\n

"The flipside of what happened, and I understand it, I'm no saint as far as this stuff is concerned, but on one hand Ollie Robinson is giving him a send-off and on the other hand Joe Root is running across to shake his hand and pat him on the back and say well played."<\/p>\n

Robinson isn't the only one who Ponting has had to put in their place during this match.<\/p>\n

\ufeffHe was standing alongside former England batter Kevin Pietersen on the Sky Sports coverage during day four when the pair had an awkward exchange.<\/p>\n

Pietersen was lauding the efforts of England batter Joe Root, who \ufeffwas stumped for 46 in the second innings.<\/p>\n

"He owned the g\ufeffame," Pietersen said of Root.<\/p>\n

"He ran the game, he was pure quality and he just owned that \ufeffspace.<\/p>\n

"All of this lot (pointing to Ponting) were just scratching their heads, going '\ufeffwhat do we do?'."'<\/p>\n

Ponting stared at Pietersen looking bemused before retorting, "well, he's out now. He got 40".<\/p>\n
