British boxer Daniel Dubois was heavily criticised for taking a knee in his TKO stoppage loss to Joe Joyce<\/a> but it turns out he had good reason.<\/p>\n

Many in the boxing world couldn't believe their eyes when the previously undefeated Dubois, 23, went down against former Olympic silver medallist Joyce, 35, without much fuss late in the bout.<\/p>\n

Dubois, who was 15-0 heading into the fight with 14 KOs, went down after taking blow to the eye during the tenth round.<\/p>\n

Joyce had peppered his left eye with jabs the entire fight. When Dubois walked straight into another shot from Joyce early in the round and dropped to a knee, he was counted out by the referee. The star was taken straight to hospital after the defeat.<\/p>\n

However, the manner in which Dubois went down upset some pundits and fighters, with some suggesting he "quit" without considering the serious nature of his injury.<\/p>\n

Speaking on BT Sport, former champion David Haye said it wasn't a good look, while fellow fighter Carl Frampton also frowned upon the way it all went down.<\/p>\n

"I was very unhappy with the way he took a knee," Haye said. "He took a shot to the eye obviously it's painful. I never like seeing a fighter take a knee, I'm sure Carl is the same I'd rather get knocked out."<\/p>\n

Frampton said: "We all like Dubois, I think he's a likeable guy, but I think he quit there.<\/p>\n

"I have to be brutally honest, let's call a spade a spade, he took a knee from a shot in the eye. His eye was a mess it was closed, but I'd be getting dragged out of the ring, I wouldn't take a knee."<\/p>\n

Heavyweight rival Dillian Whyte also threw shade at Dubois calling him a "coward" for taking a knee.<\/p>\n

"Man's out here quitting in mid-fight," Whyte posted on Instagram.<\/p>\n

"They were saying they wanna fight me and they were gonna knock me out.<\/p>\n

"One thing with me, no quit, straight warrior. If I'm losing, I'm getting knocked out.<\/p>\n

"Straight warrior, straight warrior. And these cowards wanna mention me."<\/p>\n

The Athletic<\/em>\u00a0reported Dubois suffered a broken orbital socket and nerve damage to his left eye, justifying the need to end the fight.<\/p>\n

The injury is career altering considering was ranked No.2 with the WBO heading into the fight but with recovery time and the loss, his chances of fighting for a world title in the near future appear to be dashed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
