M\ufeffcLaren<\/a> driver Lando Norris<\/a> had his points finish at the Canadian Grand Prix<\/a> thrown out after he was handed an unusual time penalty.<\/p>\n

The stewards pinged \ufeffNorris with a five-second time penalty for "unsportsmanlike behaviour" after he hindered the cars behind him to ensure he was not held up by Aussie teammate Oscar Piastri<\/a> when the McLaren performed a double pit stop.<\/p>\n

The sanction caused Norris to drop from ninth position at the chequered flag, down to 13th. He placed behind Piastri in 11th.<\/p>\n

It was alleged that Norris "slowed under the safety car to avoid a delay during a 'double stack' for his pitstop".<\/p>\n

The safety car was deployed when Mercedes driver George Russell collided with the barriers on lap 12, \ufefflittering debris across the track.<\/p>\n

With Norris and Piastri running \ufeffseventh and sixth at the time, the stewards claimed Norris "slowed to allow a gap to form between his teammate in car 81 and him" in preparation for both drivers to stop for fresh tyres.<\/p>\n

"There was a significant difference in speed between car 4 and car 81 between Turns 10 and 13 (approximately 50km\/h)," the stewards' report read.<\/p>\n

"Article 12.2.1.l of the International Sporting Code refers to 'any infringement of the principles of fairness in competition, behaviour in an unsportsmanlike manner or attempt to influence the results of a competition, in a way that is contrary to sporting ethics'."<\/p>\n

With Norris pushed outside the top 10, and the points, McLaren extended its \ufefffruitless run at the Canadian GP, which now stretches back to 2014.<\/p>\n

Speaking after the race, Norris said he was bewildered by the punishment.<\/p>\n

"It doesn't make sense to me," he told reporters.<\/p>\n

"I was three seconds, four seconds behind my delta which everyone quite often is.<\/p>\n

"You want to keep the temperature in the tyres so everyone leaves gaps, opens up gaps, and it wasn't like I was 10 seconds behind my delta.<\/p>\n

"If it's because of the delta difference then most people should be given penalties for the last three years or four years, so I'm a bit confused. I didn't do anything wrong.<\/p>\n

"It was also too early to box from what we were planning to do. I wasn't planning to box in the first place and then I got a call just before the pit entry. Of course, you go slow, you go quick and you speed up.<\/p>\n

"I slowed down to try and warm up the tyres a bit, and as soon as they told me to box I pushed and tried to go as fast as I could."<\/p>\n

In what was otherwise a polished race, Norris pulled off several stunning overtakes after starting of the race from seventh and challenged Alpine's Esteban Ocon during the closing stages before running wide in the last sector.<\/p>\n

"The rest of the race I was very happy, good overtakes, good racing a lot of the time," Norris said.<\/p>\n

"I don't think we were quite on the pace but I made the most of it, there were some fun overtakes and I was happy with how it went."\ufeff<\/p>\n
