Pop star turned professional swimmer Cody Simpson<\/a> has missed out on a ticket to the world championships in Japan next month.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe 26-year-old will not be one of the 38 athletes representing the Dolphins in Fukuoka from July 23, after failing to qualify at the Australian trials in Melbourne.<\/p>\n

On Sunday he had one more chance to qualify, competing in the 100m butterfly, but he finished fifth behind Matthew Temple, Kyle Chalmers<\/a>, Shaun Champion and Jesse Coleman. Simpson also failed to qualify in the freestyle event.<\/p>\n

Onlookers noted an awkward moment post-race between Simpson and the man in the lane next to him, Chalmers.<\/p>\n

The pair were at the centre of ongoing intense focus during \ufefflast year's Commonwealth Games after Simpson went public with his relationship with teammate Emma McKeon, who had previously dated Chalmers.<\/p>\n

Chalmers has done his best to brush off any suggestion of a rift in camp but after beating Simpson in the butterfly on Sunday, he swam past his devastated teammate and didn't say a word.<\/p>\n

\ufeffChalmers will be a veteran in the team in Japan that includes three rookies making their international debut.<\/p>\n

Kai Taylor, Bianca Crisp, and Jack Wilson will all be on the plane for the first time.<\/p>\n

Teenage superstar Mollie O'Callaghan won the 100m and 200m freestyle, stunning the likes of reigning Olympic champion McKeon, and also swam second in the 100m backstroke.<\/p>\n

\ufeffKaylee McKeown qualified for her pet event, the 200m backstroke, with a swim that was only 0.56 seconds off her own world record.<\/p>\n

She will also contest the 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley.<\/p>\n

Ariarne Titmus also qualified for three events, winning the 400m and 800m freestyle finals and finishing second in the 200m free behind O'Callaghan.\ufeff<\/p>\n
