A\ufeff brilliant century from Joe Root<\/a> has put England<\/a> slightly ahead of Australia after an enthralling opening day of the Ashes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, England posted a solid first innings total of 393 before a shock declaration from skipper Ben Stokes<\/a> despite the home side being just eight wickets down.<\/p>\n

Australia ended the day on 0-14 after Usman Khawaja and David Warner negotiated a tricky four-over spell against the new ball.<\/p>\n

Harry Brook looked to have luck on his side when he was dropped by Travis Head in his 20s, but that all turned very quickly for the Englishman.<\/p>\n

Facing Nathan Lyon from around the wicket, Brook was struck on the body and lifted his arms to avoid gloving the ball, only for the ball to bounce onto his stumps.<\/p>\n
