N\ufeffew South Wales<\/a> legend turned assistant coach Andrew Johns<\/a> has made a bold call on the opposition.<\/p>\n

In a rare piece of praise for Queensland<\/a>, devout Blues backer Johns declared the current Maroons\ufeff spine is getting close to being the greatest ever.<\/p>\n

The comment came just a week out from the second game of the 2023 series, and with the southern state needing to win at Suncorp Stadium next Wednesday to force a decider in Sydney.<\/p>\n

Johns is typically reluctant to pump the tyres of Queensland, evidenced by an on-air stoush with his brother Matty during a radio segment last month.<\/p>\n

\ufeffBut the champion Blues halfback went as far as to say the current spine of fullback Reece Walsh, five-eighth Cameron Munster, halfback Daly Cherry-Evans, and hooker combination Harry Grant and Ben Hunt, is almost as good as the legendary team that won eight series in a row.<\/p>\n

Billy Slater, Darren Lockyer, Johnathan Thurston, Cameron Smith, and later Cooper Cronk formed the spine for most of the dynasty that stretched from 2006 to 2013, and won another three consecutive series after a Blues breakthrough in 2014.<\/p>\n

"When you look at the great spines in Origin, you look at that spine during the dominant years – Lockyer, Thurston, Smith, Slater," Johns said on Wide World of Sports' Freddy and the Eighth<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

"You look at Queensland's spine at the moment – Reece Walsh, Munster, DCE, Harry Grant, and Ben Hunt – it's getting closer to that great spine.<\/p>\n

"Munster on the weekend (for Storm), what he did to Cronulla – along with Harry Grant – scared the absolute bejesus out of me. His performance on the weekend was just out of this world.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Melbourne five-eighth Munster is the best No.6 in the game when he's in form.<\/p>\n

It was he who produced some brilliance late in Origin I to tear NSW's right defensive edge apart and set up Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow for the go ahead try.<\/p>\n

Legendary Maroons playmaker Lockyer wants to see Munster play like that for the full 80 minutes at Suncorp next week.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Munster, he got involved when it counted last game in Adelaide, but I guess if he has a mindset that he wants to be involved from the first minute and get his hands on the ball, that's really good for Queensland," Lockyer told Freddy and the Eighth<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"We've got to hope, from our perspective, that those star players we've got stay fit and healthy.\ufeff"<\/p>\n
