Just days after a dominant win over Josh Taylor to become a two-division champion, Teofimo Lopez<\/a> called time on his career live on TV in the US.<\/p>\n

Lopez, 25, captured a title in a second weight class beating the formerly unbeaten Taylor by unanimous decision to win the WBO's junior welterweight belt.<\/p>\n

Lopez (19-1) won by scores of 115-113 on two cards and 117-111 on the other.<\/p>\n

He looked like the fighter who had won multiple versions of the title at 135 pounds, highlighted by a victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko, before losing them to George Kambosos Jr. in November 2021.<\/a><\/p>\n

Yet the Brooklyn native\ufeff has decided to move on, telling ESPN's Max Kellerman he wants to walk away from the sport.<\/p>\n

"I'm going to be announcing my retirement to the sport of boxing," Lopez told This Just In. "Blood, sweat and tears, I've done for the sport. At a young age, at 25 years young, and the first male really to become a two-time undisputed world champion in a four-belt era.<\/p>\n

"Right now I have a lot of ideas for the sport of boxing. I really can't do that If I'm always in the gym preparing for an upcoming fight. I'm really just focusing on that task right now."<\/p>\n

When asked if fighters like lightweight champ Devin Haney – who took the belts off Kambosos and then defeated the Aussie a second time – could tempt him for a big pay day to remain in the sport, Lopez said: \ufeff"No because it's just copy and paste. I'm the first and youngest four-belt champ at 23 years young. They copy and pasted and put it onto Haney."<\/p>\n

Kellerman\ufeff responded: "He had to win the fights".<\/p>\n

Lopez replied: "But against who?".<\/p>\n

Kellerman: "The guy who took your title (Kambosos), I know you had a medical condition that's legit, but he did beat him".<\/p>\n

Lopez's interaction with the ESPN host prompted a sharp rebuke from Kambosos on social media\ufeff, who called out Kellerman for "really poor journalism".<\/p>\n

As for Lopez taking on someone like Gervonta Davis, the two-time champ said: "Tank Davis, he's too scared. So other than that man, just trying to stay focused on opening up a boxing\/combat gym in south Florida\ufeff and trying to benefit and help the sport of boxing".<\/p>\n

The announcement was viewed with skepticism by the boxing world, with most believing this move, like most premature retirement announcements, are mostly about money.<\/p>\n

Lopez made several retirement-related comments leading up to the fight with Taylor, and then immediately after said he needed to "take a break" from the sport.<\/p>\n

He clarified those comments the day after on The Porter Way Podcast<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"The only way you get Teofimo back is a nine-figure contract deal. Because I've made ESPN over a hundred million dollars, and I'm still getting paid a million dollars to fight," he said.<\/p>\n

"While all these others fighters who have not even done a quarter of what I've done and accomplished are in the sport, they're getting eight, 10, 12, 15 million dollars. So obviously I'm the black sheep of the industry."<\/p>\n
