NRL premiership winner Paul Gallen<\/a> has warned St George Illawarra Dragons<\/a> fans to be patient \ufeffas the club prepares to appoint Shane Flanagan as head coach<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Dragons have been on the search for a new mentor after Anthony Griffin was sacked and Jason Ryles rejected the role, choosing to be assistant coach at Melbourne.<\/p>\n

Having not played finals since 2018, supporters of the club have been starved of success from the first grade side but Gallen believes Flanagan won't be a quick fix.<\/p>\n

"He will set things up in that club the way they should be, he will not be looking for an overnight change," he said on 2GB's Wide World of Sports Radio.<\/p>\n

"I don't know what sort of contract he'll sign, how many years he will sign for, but let me tell you Dragons fans, it will not change overnight down there. It'll take him three, maybe four years to turn that team around properly, the first grade team."<\/p>\n

Flanagan, who coached Cronulla to its 2016 premiership victory with Gallen as captain, has not been a head coach of an NRL side since 2018 due to a de-registration that expired in 2022.<\/p>\n

The coach's legacy at the Sharks has seen its junior pathways system thrive and Gallen believes he will have the same affect at the Dragons. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"What he will set up is systems and pathways in place to ensure the Dragons will be a strong side for many, many years," he said.<\/p>\n

"The Cronulla Sharks, from what I understand, have the second biggest junior nursery in NSW. It was always Penrith and Parramatta that were the biggest two and I think Sharks were third. Now Sharks, the shire, have now over taken Parramatta. That's because of the systems Flanno's put in place, we are now considered a development club, just like Penrith and Parramatta.<\/p>\n

"He will set that up in Wollongong \ufeffand Kogarah areas to ensure the Dragons are a strong side for many, many years, that's what he'll do for the club."<\/p>\n
