Nick Kyrgios<\/a> lost his comeback from knee surgery 7-5, 6-3 to Chinese player Wu Yibing in the first round of the Stuttgart Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist looked far from his best in his first match of the year. Kyrgios, a two-time semi-finalist in Stuttgart, was playing for the first time since October in Tokyo. The 28-year-old Australian had a knee operation in January.<\/p>\n

Kyrgios has not played a grand slam match since a five-set loss to Karen Khachanov in a US Open quarter-final nine months ago when he was the favourite to win the tournament.<\/p>\n

He showed signs of rust during the clash despite smashing 11 aces in the first set against Wu\ufeff, who was playing his first professional match on grass.<\/p>\n

The complaints were also there when he fumed over the lack of white towels.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"It took me three games to get white towels," he said after the loss.<\/p>\n

"They soak up the sweat better. I'm the same at every tourney. The all have white ones in the locker room.<\/p>\n

"I'm not asking to move mountains. White towels actually take the sweat off my body – we are professional athletes."<\/p>\n

As for his performance, Kyrgios admitted he has some work to do, in what was his first match in months.<\/p>\n

"It was my first match in a long time," he said.<\/p>\n

"I guess it was my final task of rehab to go out, play matches and see how my knee pulled up."<\/p>\n

Kyrgios added: "I have to get used to playing in front of the crowd again. Feeling the moments like break points – all that stuff is new to me again.<\/p>\n

"I made it through the match with no major pain. I've got a lot more work to do, but I'm taking some positive signs from it."<\/p>\n

Kyrgios will compete at Halle, Germany, next week, where he lost last year in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

Wu next faces Marton Fucsovics, who rallied to beat Denis Shapovalov 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere at Stuttgart, fifth-seeded American Tommy Paul defeated Benjamin Bonzi 6-3, 6-4.<\/p>\n

Also, French player Gregoire Barrere defeated home favorite Oscar Otte 6-4, 6-3 and Australia\u2019s Christopher O\u2019Connell eased past another German, Daniel Altmaier, 6-3, 6-1.<\/p>\n

Germany\u2019s Jan-Lennard Struff defeated Zhang Zhizhen 6-1, 6-4, and Russia\u2019s Aslan Karatsev outlasted Corentin Moutet 7-6 (0), 6-7 (8), 7-5.<\/p>\n

Defending champion Matteo Berrettini was knocked out by Italian compatriot Lorenzo Sonego on Monday.<\/p>\n
