{"id":307606,"date":"2023-06-13T21:39:25","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T21:39:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=307606"},"modified":"2023-06-13T22:58:37","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T22:58:37","slug":"pga-tour-left-on-our-own-amid-saudi-stoush","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/?p=307606","title":{"rendered":"PGA Tour &#039;left on our own&#039; amid Saudi stoush"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Commissioner Jay Monahan has told congressional members the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/golf\/pga-tour\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\" PGA Tour\">PGA Tour<\/a> was \u201cleft on our own\u201d to fend off Saudi Arabia&#x27;s bid to take over the sport with <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/golf\/liv-golf-series\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\" LIV Golf\">LIV Golf<\/a> because of the United States&#x27; geopolitical alliance with the kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Monahan sent the letter to various lawmakers on June 9, three days after the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/golf\/liv-pga-tour-merger-cameron-smith-aussie-speaks-ahead-of-us-open-2023\/fe23dcbe-ccb6-4090-be09-56fd46b96d03\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"PGA Tour&#x27;s stunning announcement of an agreement with Saudi Arabia&#x27;s sovereign wealth fund\">PGA Tour&#x27;s stunning announcement of an agreement with Saudi Arabia&#x27;s sovereign wealth fund<\/a> and the European tour to pool commercial business and rights in a new company.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement, while still not finalised, would end all litigation between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund. (Photo by Harry How\/Getty Images)\" data-width=\"5954\" data-height=\"3969\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis left the very real prospect of another decade of expensive and distracting litigation and the PGA TOUR\u2019s long-term existence under threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three days after Monahan&#x27;s letter \u2014 first reported by Politico and obtained by The Associated Press \u2014 the leader of a Senate subcommittee demanded records from the PGA Tour and Saudi golf interests amid \u201cserious questions\u201d on how the agreement came about.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Richard Blumenthal, the chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, also said he wanted to hear the PGA Tour&#x27;s plan to keep tax-exempt status.<\/p>\n<p>It was not clear to whom Monahan sent his letter because that was redacted, though it was believed not every member of Congress received it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that we did everything we could possibly do to defend what we stand for, including spending tens of millions of dollars to defend ourselves from litigation instigated by LIV Golf \u2014 significant funds diverted away from our core mission to benefit our players and generate charity,\u201d Monahan said.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"3b971c9f-1bc6-4b03-b111-69f62d4fc230\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/3b971c9f-1bc6-4b03-b111-69f62d4fc230-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"4500\" data-height=\"2999\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He said the tour secured a federal court ruling that PIF was not protected under the Foreign Service Sovereignty Act because a judge had said the Saudi wealth fund was doing commercial business in the US That ruling has been appealed to the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver, extending the anti-trust lawsuits through at least the middle of next year.<\/p>\n<p>Monahan said the agreement was not a merger with LIV Golf, a 48-man league that has a team component and plays eight of its 14 tournaments in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement last week was for PIF, the PGA Tour and European tour to pool their business interests \u2014 that includes PIF-funded LIV Golf. Still unclear is whether LIV Golf continues after this year and how players who defected from the PGA Tour could return.<\/p>\n<p>Monahan has referred to the agreement only as a framework, and even in a hostile player meeting last week at the Canadian Open, he could not offer many details.<\/p>\n<p>In his letter to lawmakers, Monahan said the agreement would allow the PGA Tour to run tournaments as before, with him as commissioner and New York attorney Ed Herlihy as the chairman of the board.<\/p>\n<p>Monahan would be CEO of the new for-profit company \u2014 he described it as a subsidiary of the PGA Tour \u2014 with Yasir Al-Rumayyan as the company&#x27;s chairman.
