A week after the golf<\/a> world was blindsided by the announcement LIV Golf<\/a> and the PGA Tour<\/a> would merge, Cameron Smith<\/a> is still full of questions about exactly what his future looks like.<\/p>\n

Amid final preparations for the third major of the year, the US Open<\/a> at the Los Angeles Country Club, Smith told media he's unsure when or even if he will be allowed to return to the PGA Tour, saying it's a hypothetical he couldn't answer.<\/p>\n

"It's too early to say yet with what's going on here. It's going to be interesting to see how the next kind of few months, even year, plays out," he said.<\/p>\n

"I think there's still a lot of stuff to be worked out, and as time goes on we'll get to know more and more.<\/p>\n

\"Cameron<\/p>\n

"But there's definitely a lot of curious players on both sides as to what the future's going to look like."<\/p>\n

The controversial merger was announced seemingly out of the blue last week.<\/a> The merger will see the US and European PGA tours form a new entity with the Saudi state-owned Public Investment Fund, which was bankrolling LIV Golf.<\/p>\n

Key stakeholders on both sides of the merger were only informed hours before it was made public, while players found out on Twitter.\ufeff<\/p>\n

PGA Tour loyalists Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods said the merger had left them feeling "cheated"<\/a> and like "sacrificial lambs".<\/a><\/p>\n

The merger has led to calls for long-term PGA Tour \ufeffCommissioner Jay Monaghan, who only 12 months ago led a staunch campaign at the Canadian Open against joining LIV, to stand down.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday morning (AEST), a US Senator demanded bosses on both sides reveal the meeting records and details that led to the announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Smith meanwhile, said his first reaction to the news was to dismiss it as "kind of a joke".<\/p>\n

"I really know as much as you guys know, to be honest," the 29-year-old Queenslander said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I haven't been told much at all. I'm just taking it as it goes along.<\/p>\n

"I guess if anything comes up, I'll let you guys know. But for the moment, it's just trying to play the best golf I can and trying to win a US Open."<\/p>\n

Smith's best US Open result remains a tie for fourth in his first event in 2015 at Chambers Bay. He has missed his last two US Open cuts at the Country Club in Brookline and Torrey Pines.<\/p>\n

Smith has been drawn to play his first two rounds with American Sam Bennett and Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick.<\/p>\n
