Collingwood<\/a> coach Craig McRae said he showed his side a photo of Melbourne's Brodie Grundy<\/a> prior to the Pies' first meeting with their old teammate\ufeff.<\/p>\n

Grundy kicked a goal and had 26 hitouts as the Demons survived a frantic finish to run out 8. 18. (66) to 9. 8. (62) winners<\/a> in front of over 83,000 spectactors at the MCG.<\/p>\n

The King's Birthday clash was Grundy's first against the club where he played 177 games and was a two-time best and fairest winner.<\/p>\n

Following his side's four-point loss, McRae revealed the thinking behind his left-field tactic.<\/p>\n

\"MELBOURNE,<\/p>\n

"I said before the game to the boys \u2026 I put a photo of him up and I said, 'We all really care for Brodie. Many of us in the room have close relationships with him, he had a great contribution to the Collingwood Football Club'," McRae said.<\/p>\n

"You make tough decisions, list management-wise, to what you think is best for the future.<\/p>\n

"We want him to play well and perform well \u2013 just not against us."<\/p>\n

Grundy was traded against his will in the off-season as the Magpies looked to ease their salary cap burden, but was bizarrely booed by Collingwood fans with his opening touch.<\/p>\n

\"Grundy<\/p>\n

However, he enjoyed the last laugh, kicking a vital goal in the third quarter.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThere was a fair bit made of it, but in the end there's a lot of respect there between myself and my ex-teammates," he told 3AW after the game.<\/p>\n

"It was really pleasing to get on the end of a win, they've been the benchmark side all year and I thought our strategy going into the game was really strong and we executed.\n<\/p>\n

\n"I had a bit of jitters on that first set shot. Our leading goalkicker, Bayley Fritsch, he gets around me and he came out and said, 'Mate, just compose yourself', so it was nice to kick it through for sure."<\/p>\n
