Australasian motorsport is littered with racing family dynasties; from the Brabhams and Setons to the Johnsons and the Millens.<\/p>\n

Between New Zealand where they began and Australia where they've come to call home, the Richards family is one of the most successful of all.<\/p>\n

'Gentleman' Jim Richards won the Bathurst 1000<\/a> on seven occasions, putting him second equal with Craig Lowndes<\/a> and only two wins behind the King of the Mountain, Peter Brock<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Stan Sport is the only place to watch all the 2023 SpeedSeries.<\/strong><\/em> All the action streaming ad free, live and on demand<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

His son, Steven Richards, claimed victory in the Bathurst 1000 five times.<\/p>\n

Although the family is perhaps more known for its exploits in V8 racing, the Richards have a strong history in front-wheel-drive touring cars.<\/p>\n

The Richards shared the podium in the 1998 Bathurst 1000, Jim winning in a Volvo S40 with Rickard Rydell while Steven finished second that year in a Nissan Primera with Matt Neal.<\/p>\n

Now, third-generation racer Clay is set to continue that legacy of touring car racing in the TCR Australia Series that could see him racing at the famed Mount Panorama.<\/p>\n

Clay will pilot an Audi RS3 LMS in the third round at Winton Motor Raceway on June 9-11.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

It's very much a family-run affair.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Clay wrapped the car in stickers himself and he'll have dad Steven on the tools.<\/p>\n

While the 22-year-old is used to working on the car himself, he's been told to focus on the driving.<\/p>\n

"He's given me a couple of tips," Clay told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"He hasn't driven one in a while so I'm sort of not holding him to it too much.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Dad's always been in my corner helping me out whenever I can. I suppose any bit of advice, especially from Dad, is always helpful.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Dad's very hands-on as well. he's been hands-on throughout his whole really motorsport journey.<\/p>\n

"I try to sort of help whenever I can but Dad prefers me just to sort of just kick to the side a little bit and just watch from a distance."<\/p>\n

Clay said having the Richards name doesn't add any pressure, despite his family's success.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ultimately, he's keen to make his own name.<\/p>\n

"I just kick back, do my own thing and, just have fun with it," he said.<\/p>\n

"That's the biggest thing Dad always tells me is to have fun with it and just do your thing and see how you go. But no, there's no pressure at all.<\/p>\n

"There's not really any set expectations this weekend, just really just go out and have fun, learn heaps as well and race with these guys as well," he added.<\/p>\n

"The racing is a lot different to, let's say the Toyota 86 Series. So it's just basically just soaking it all in this weekend and seeing what we can do in the future as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"That's basically the whole whole idea of it. If we can get some good results along the way this weekend that's just a bonus."<\/p>\n

While racing V8s might seem the logical step up for Clay, he admitted the cost entry point and opportunities were a consideration.<\/p>\n

For now, his TCR Australia Series debut is a one-off appearance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Beyond Winton, they'll reassess their plans, which could see them return for the Bathurst International later this year.<\/p>\n
