Details of a bizarre incident labelled one of the "top five dumb ways to lose a race"<\/a> have come to light after suggestions a commentator might have been to blame.<\/p>\n

James Moffat was leading the opening National Trans Am Series<\/a> race at Phillip Island comfortably when his window net came undone.<\/p>\n

Under the category's rules, the window net must be done up at all times for safety reasons, meaning he had to forfeit the lead and come to the pits to have it reattached.<\/p>\n

Stan Sport is the only place to watch all the 2023 SpeedSeries.<\/strong><\/em> All the action streaming ad free, live and on demand<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

Moffat was spoken to by Stan Sport commentator Chris Stubbs on the grid prior to the race when the window net was undone.<\/p>\n

It was suggested Stubbs might have been to blame for the protective device coming loose amid uncertainty as to who was responsible for it being reattached improperly on the grid.<\/p>\n

Now the full story has emerged that it was actually Moffat who had reattached the window net from the driver's seat.<\/p>\n

"(I was) in front of that first race, extending the lead, doing it pretty comfortably, and then got the call on the radio for the 'come into the pit lane' to rectify the window net issue with the car," said Moffat on Stan Sport's Shorts preview.<\/p>\n

Moffat laughed, "I don't know how that happened, Stubbsy. Can you maybe help us out there?"<\/p>\n

Stubbs offered his explanation of the incident in which he allayed fears he was at fault.<\/p>\n

"I did interview Moff beforehand," said Stubbs.<\/p>\n

"Everyone \u2013 it was funny \u2013 in the garage, turned and looked at me straight away as soon as that net came down because they knew I had spoken to you.<\/p>\n

"I had to run straight over to the cameraman to be like 'I didn't touch his net, did I? I did not do that'.<\/p>\n

"Mitch, the cameraman, was like 'No, Stubbsy. It's all right. We didn't touch it. Moff had it pulled down when we got there and as we walked away he was putting it back up'.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It did scare me, and it's pretty easily done."<\/p>\n

Stubbs said he was "worried" the interview with Moffat "could be a little awkward" after the incident cost Moffat victory.<\/p>\n

All jokes aside, the Trans Am points leader said he had some safety concerns for what he said was an unprecedented situation.<\/p>\n

Moffat said crew members should be allowed onto the grid to help in situations where drivers are interviewed and mightn't be able to judge whether the window net is done up properly.<\/p>\n

"From a personal point of view, it's just unfortunate that we happen to be leading the race and it affected us pretty heavily," said Moffat.<\/p>\n

"I think, moving forward, obviously from a broadcast point of view, it's important we have presenters on the grid speaking to the drivers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It adds to the coverage, but maybe from a Motorsport Australia point of view, and a safety point of view, if we're going to allow TV personnel onto the grid speaking to the drivers, then at least one member of that car's crew is allowed onto the grid to put the window nets up.<\/p>\n

"Anyway, it'll be one of those things that haunts me for a while. Of strange ways or silly ways to win a race, that's right up there."<\/p>\n

The National Trans Am Series returns at Winton Motor Raceway on June 9-11 for the fourth round of SpeedSeries.<\/p>\n

Moffatt leads on 310 points ahead of Garry Rogers Motorsport teammate Lochie Dalton on 279 points while Dream Racing's Josh Webster sits third with 263 points.<\/p>\n

SpeedSeries coverage live and ad-free on Stan Sport from 11am on Saturday while 9Gem will carry free-to-air coverage from 2pm.<\/p>\n

Sunday's action will be live, ad-free, and exclusively on Stan Sport from 9.30am.<\/p>\n
