There's no doubt in Ian Chappell<\/a>'s mind that David Warner<\/a> deserves to make the cut for the World Test Championship final and the Ashes<\/a>\ufeff \u2014 and the former skipper has described Australia's depth of opening batters as a "major problem".<\/p>\n

Warner's position in the Australian XI has been a topic of intense debate in recent times given a meagre stretch that's lasted\ufeff more than two years.<\/p>\n

Since walking out to bat at the SCG in January 2021, when he played his first Test since the COVID-19 shutdown of 2020, the left-hander has averaged 29.48\ufeff.<\/p>\n

He's exceeded 25 runs once from his last 10 innings, doing so when he \ufeffpummelled 200 from 255 balls in last year's Boxing Day Test<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But when Chappell was this week asked by Wide World of Sports if Warner should be picked for the World Test Championship decider and the Ashes, his response was: "Oh, shit yeah".\ufeff<\/p>\n

The 75-Test legend has little faith in the candidates queuing up to replace Warner when his departure from the side arrives, including Marcus Harris<\/a>, Cameron Bancroft<\/a> and Matthew Renshaw<\/a>.<\/p>\n

While his opinion of Will Pucovski<\/a> is high, the reality is the prodigious Victorian's future in cricket is incredibly uncertain because of his concerning history with concussion.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\ufeff"That's one of Australia's big problems \u2014 where they go for Australian batsmen down the track, because not only are they going to lose Warner, they're going to lose (Usman) Khawaja pretty soon, as well," Chappell told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"The replacements? Harris hasn't proved anything, Bancroft hasn't proved anything. The best of them is Pucovski, but it's very difficult to pick him when he's had had 10 or 11 concussions.<\/p>\n

"So, opening is a major problem for Australia down the track.<\/p>\n

"But at the moment, if Warner makes runs they're OK … I'm not bothered about the critics\ufeff because most of them wouldn't know, but if you want to ask me what I think of Warner \u2014 well, I think he's a very good player, but like everyone else, he's got to keep making runs to hold his place. But if you're jumping up and down about getting rid of Warner, you've got to think about who you're going to replace him with.<\/p>\n

"And if you're thinking of replacing him with Harris, then that's a joke.<\/p>\n

"I think\ufeff Renshaw's probably the best of them (considering Pucovski's unavailability), but I wouldn't be putting Renshaw ahead of Warner at the moment."<\/p>\n

Warner's 2019 Ashes tour was a mess, yielding 95 runs at 9.50.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Stuart Broad was his kryptonite, bowling around the wicket to him with extraordinary success.<\/p>\n

But Chappell isn't fazed.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Everybody has a bad series," he said.<\/p>\n

"What it's going to boil down to is how he goes against Broad this time, and I think Warner is a good enough player that he might just come out and get on top of Broad. So if he does that, he's fine."<\/p>\n

In addition to Harris, Bancroft, Renshaw and Pucovski, other men potentially in calculations to replace Warner at the top of the order are Travis Head, Daniel Hughes, Henry Hunt, Tim Ward, Sam Whiteman \ufeffand Ashley Chandrasinghe.<\/p>\n

Australia will meet India in the World Test Championship final at The Oval from Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The opening Test of the Ashes, hosted by \ufeffEdgbaston, will start on June 16.<\/p>\n
