PGA Tour<\/a> professionals are reportedly asking for commissioner Jay Monahan to stand down following Wednesday's bombshell merger announcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Monahan secretly struck a deal with the Saudi Public Investment Fund to join forces and bring the breakaway LIV<\/a> tour into the fold, ending two years of bitter public and courtroom fighting.<\/p>\n

But the truce completely blindsided players, as well as Aussie golfing great and LIV CEO Greg Norman, who was informed of the deal just before it was made public.<\/p>\n

Leading CNN world sport analyst Don Riddell says Monahan may yet lose his job \ufeffover the stunning arrangement.<\/p>\n

"This one really came absolutely out of the blue, it was completely stunning news and the dust is still a long way from settling," Riddell told Nine's Today<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"The truth is we don't really know what this means yet. It's kind of a burying of the hatchet.<\/p>\n

"Jay Monahan has been speaking to his players, and from the sounds of it most of them are really, really unhappy.<\/p>\n

"A lot of them took a really principled, moral stand and said 'we're not going to LIV'. They said no to offers of 75, 100, 200 million dollars, to stick with the PGA Tour and defend it.<\/p>\n

"Now they come into work and discover we're all kind of on the same team now anyway.<\/p>\n

"They are really unhappy. I understand some of them are calling for the PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan to resign.<\/p>\n

"You have to remember the PGA Tour is supposedly run by the players, and yet none of them were involved in this decision."<\/p>\n

Monahan had – publicly – been staunchly opposed to the breakaway LIV league up until the merger was announced.<\/p>\n

He revealed the deal had been put together in seven weeks leading up to Wednesday.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The Saudi PIF is widely considered a sportswashing exercise, \ufeffand the nation's government accused of attaching its brand to numerous leagues in an attempt to brush over various human rights atrocities.<\/p>\n

In taking the moral high ground, Monahan had previously used the 9\/11 attacks to take aim at players accepting Saudi cash.<\/p>\n

Following Wednesday's announcement, the 9\/11 Families United organisation took aim at Monahan for hypocrisy.<\/p>\n

"Mr Monahan talked last summer about knowing people who lost loved ones on 9\/11, then wondered aloud on national television whether LIV golfers ever had to apologise for being a member of the PGA Tour," said Terry Strada, whose husband died in the attacks.<\/p>\n

"PGA Tour leaders should be ashamed of their hypocrisy and greed.<\/p>\n

"Our entire 9\/11 community has been betrayed by commissioner Monahan and the PGA as it appears their concern for our loved ones was merely window-dressing in their quest for money – it was never to honour the great game of golf."<\/p>\n
