Former Wallabies captain Phil Waugh<\/a> has been confirmed as Rugby Australia's next new chief executive, replacing Andy Marinos.<\/p>\n

Waugh, who played 79 Tests as a tenacious flanker, becomes the first ex-Wallabies \ufeffplayer to lead RA in the role.<\/p>\n

The 43-year-old retired in 2011 and forged a new career working for Westpac, Commonwealth Bank and NAB.<\/p>\n

\ufeffWaugh has also been on the RA board since 2018 as a non-executive director and won the John Eales Medal as the best Wallabies player in 2003.<\/p>\n

He takes the hot seat at a critical juncture for the game, with a private \ufeffequity deal in motion and home World Cups in 2027 and 2029 – as well as a British and Irish Lions tour in 2025 – on the horizon.<\/p>\n

"It'd be a great time to come into rugby and be involved in the sport," Stephen Hoiles said on Stan Sport's Between Two Posts,<\/em> before Waugh's appointment.<\/a><\/p>\n

"You've got a bullish chairman (Hamish McLennan) who's out there and he's in market and doing some good things. You've got a proven head (Wallabies) coach (Eddie Jones). So you're going to want someone that's capable of managing some big personalities."<\/p>\n

Marinos resigned in May<\/a> after a reported breakdown in his relationship with McLennan.<\/p>\n

"The foundations have been established and the business is now well prepared to test the market for private equity investment, making it the right time for me to move on," Marinos said.<\/p>\n
