Ian Chappell<\/a> has shredded the state of English spin bowling after it was revealed that \ufeffselectors reached out to retired tweaker Moeen Ali<\/a> following the withdrawal of Jack Leach from the Ashes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

ESPN reported that Ali, the off-spinner who retired from Test cricket in September 2021, was being sounded out by selectors after their go-to spinner, left-arm orthodox bowler Leach, was ruled out of the Ashes<\/a> due to a stress fracture in his lower back.<\/p>\n

Chappell says the fact Leach is England's preferred option is a reflection of the country's dearth of quality spin bowling, declaring anyone adept at facing the spinning ball should turn the 31-year-old into "mince meat".<\/p>\n

The former Australian captain also blasted Ali, saying Pat Cummins and company would be "over the moon" if the 35-year-old was recalled.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I don't understand\ufeff England when it comes to spin bowling, because Jack Leach is not the answer, not against Australia, and I don't think Moeen Ali is, either," Chappell told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"So I would have thought the Australians would be over the moon if they picked Moeen Ali … It's got nothing to do with the retirement; he doesn't get Australians out. So, unless he's improved as an off-spin bowler, I don't see why they're turning to him.<\/p>\n

"(England's depth) is not very good. If you're relying on Jack Leach as your main spinner \u2014 he might be fine against the minor nations, but anyone who can play spin really should make mince meat of Jack Leach … Have a look at his record against Australia; it's no good. So, why you would go there I don't understand."<\/p>\n

Ali hasn't played a Test since England met India at The Oval in September 2021.<\/p>\n

In a Test career that began in 2014, the short-form specialist captured 195 wickets at 36.66, including 20 wickets at 64.65 against Australia.<\/p>\n

In a Test career that started in 2018, Leach has taken 124 wickets at 34.18, including \ufeffsix wickets at 53.50 against the Australians.<\/p>\n

The hosts made no attempt to hide their contempt for Leach in the 2021-22 Australian summer, tonking the Somerset spinner all around the wagon wheel.<\/p>\n

Chappell isn't sold on 18-year-old leg-spinning sensation Rehan Ahmed, who took seven wickets, including 5-48, on his Test debut against Pakistan last December.<\/p>\n

In the only Test the wrist-spinner has played, he became the youngest man to claim a five-wicket haul on Test debut, tormenting Pakistan in Karachi.<\/p>\n

Shane Warne spotted him bowling in the nets and predicted he would begin playing first-class cricket at the age of 15.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Their future is Rehan Ahmed but I don't think he's going to get many Australians out," Chappell said.<\/p>\n

"Rehan might have a lot of confidence, but he's got technical problems as a leg-spinner from what I can see because he's more attune to bowling wrong'uns. His arm is very straight which means … you struggle to spin the leggie much. He's probably young enough that he could fix that, but it's a problem and it should have been sorted out when he was younger.<\/p>\n

"But he's probably their best bet at the moment.<\/p>\n

"They don't have a good history with leg-spinners.<\/p>\n

"Australia \u2014 I think they're going to be happy with whoever England pick as a spinner."<\/p>\n

Australia will face India in the World Test Championship final at The Oval from Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The opening Test of the Ashes, hosted by \ufeffEdgbaston, will begin on June 16.<\/p>\n
