The selectors may yet pull the trigger and switch the No.6, too.<\/p>\n<p>We run the rule over potential Blues combinations for the do-or-die June 21 battle at Suncorp Stadium.<\/p>\n<p><img data-video-id=\"6328793502112\" src=\"https:\/\/vms-network-images-prod.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com\/2023\/06\/513253\/raw-capture-sequence.00_04_19_14.still301.jpg\" alt=\"Cleary&#x27;s massive blow for Blues\" data-vms-id=\"ref:clih7p7ti000u0jmsj4az5vs6\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>N\ufeffICHO HYNES AND JAROME LUAI<\/h3>\n<p>It&#x27;s the obvious \ufeffsolution and the one most likely to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Hynes is the reigning Dally M Medal winner and was already in the Blues side for game one, albeit on the bench.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/nrl\/state-of-origin-news-2023-paul-gallen-exclusive-nsw-blues-changes-game-2-nathan-cleary-damien-cook\/06516c51-1584-4426-9c98-a7292bf83083\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Paul Gallen&#x27;s column for Wide World of Sports on Monday\">Paul Gallen&#x27;s column for Wide World of Sports on Monday<\/a>, the former Blues skipper \ufeffendorsed the Sharks playmaker to replace Cleary.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;His leadership is good, he can control a game and steer his team around the park, and his kicking is great,&quot; Gallen wrote.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Watch the 2023 State of Origin series LIVE and exclusive on Channel 9 and<\/strong><\/em><em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/9now.app.link\/1QDVFYZrWab\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>9Now<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hynes has developed into a genuine controlling No.7 but has a strong running game to boot, and is a sizeable body in the defensive line.<\/p>\n<p>He and Luai have played side by side previously during junior touch football tournaments.\ufeff<\/p>\n<p>There aren&#x27;t many players more deserving of a crack at the starting spot based on his form over the last 18 months.\ufeff<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"86e04ea5-bba7-4bfb-a84f-561a1e679b5d\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/86e04ea5-bba7-4bfb-a84f-561a1e679b5d-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Nicho Hynes.\" data-width=\"3933\" data-height=\"2622\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>NICHO HYNES AND CODY WALKER<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#x27;re picking purely on club form, this is the halves pairing NSW should go with.<\/p>\n<p>Walker&#x27;s form for South Sydney has been far and above any other five-eighth at the Blues&#x27; disposal, including that of Luai.<\/p>\n<p>He has an incredible eight tries and 19 try assists for the Bunnies in 14 games this year. A tackle efficiency of 87.8 per cent shows he&#x27;s no mug on the other side of the ball, either.<\/p>\n<p>Counting in his favour &#8211; aside from his personal form this season &#8211; will be Latrell Mitchell&#x27;s return as NSW&#x27;s left centre. Walker and Mitchell form a lethal combination at club level and it would no doubt strike fear into that Maroons edge if they were to team up for their state.\ufeff<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"6c9e1a54-9387-44e4-8e7b-9fc80441cb09\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/6c9e1a54-9387-44e4-8e7b-9fc80441cb09-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Cody Walker of the Blues celebrates after scoring a try during game two of the 2020 State of Origin series.\" data-width=\"2120\" data-height=\"1193\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Counting against a Walker recall will\ufeff be his record at Origin level to date.<\/p>\n<p>From four appearances in the NSW jumper he has won only once.\ufeff His last appearance &#8211; in game three of the 2020 series &#8211; ended horribly, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/nrl\/cody-walker-state-of-origin-concussion-revealed\/b344b407-41cd-4888-b4ba-42b3909b4a63\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"being knocked out cold and failing to remember the entire game\">being knocked out cold and failing to remember the entire game<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In his WWOS column, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/nrl\/state-of-origin-news-2023-paul-gallen-exclusive-nsw-blues-changes-game-2-nathan-cleary-damien-cook\/06516c51-1584-4426-9c98-a7292bf83083\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Gallen said Luai deserved to keep his spot based on game one\">Gallen said Luai deserved to keep his spot based on game one<\/a>. But he admitted had Cleary been injured before Origin I, the Blues may have gone with a Hynes-Walker combination.<\/p>\n<h3>ADAM REYNOLDS AND CODY WALKER<\/h3>\n<p>NSW selectors have shown a liking for club combinations previously, and reuniting this one will no doubt be a tempting proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds and Walker spent six seasons together steering the Rabbitohs juggernaut, and leading the cardinal and myrtle side to the 2021 grand final, ultimately losing to Penrith.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds is the ideal managing halfback and Walker is an out-and-out five-eighth. Better than that, they know each other&#x27;s style intricately.<\/p>\n<p><img data-video-id=\"6322276013112\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/pickerimage-24.jpg\" alt=\"Classy Reynolds grubber sets up Capewell\" data-vms-id=\"ref:clf2crcpt000f0jmqfg5qicjf\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The veteran playmaker&#x27;s form for Brisbane has been exceptional, and he now calls Suncorp Stadium home, potentially giving him an advantage in the must-win game two in Brisbane. He plays there more regularly than the Queensland halves.<\/p>\n<p>Reynolds has experience in big games &#8211; winning the 2014 grand final with the Bunnies &#8211; although lost his only two Origin games in 2016 when called on to partner James Maloney.<\/p>\n<p>\ufeffHe&#x27;s also a smaller body than some other NSW options, and has a concerning injury history.<\/p>\n<h3>MITCHELL MOSES AND JAROME LUAI<\/h3>\n<p>Moses&#x27; one and only Origin game to date came in the 2021 dead rubber, when he and Jack Wighton were called on to replace Cleary and Luai in the halves positions.<\/p>\n<p>The knock on the Eels playmaker has been his ability to ice big games. The Blues lost that game three in 2021 &#8211; although Moses was injured in the process &#8211; while Parramatta lost last year&#x27;s grand final to Penrith.<\/p>\n<p>Parramatta has lost a number of tight games this season, but Moses did kick the winning field goal in extra time against the Panthers in round four.<\/p>\n<p><img data-id=\"e786e3c5-9297-4350-b14b-091a0755dab0\" src=\"https:\/\/sportinfo.pro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/e786e3c5-9297-4350-b14b-091a0755dab0-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-width=\"3727\" data-height=\"2484\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Eels have faith Moses can win them a grand final eventually, \ufeffevidenced by the contract extension he&#x27;s signed reportedly worth upwards of $1.2 million a year.<\/p>\n<p>Former Blues coach <a href=\"https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au\/nrl\/state-of-origin-2023-mitchell-moses-replacement-nathan-cleary-injury-phil-gould-comments\/05beaf33-0909-487f-99e3-6fc6b6a2a291\" target=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" title=\"Phil Gould named Moses as his ideal Cleary replacement\">Phil Gould named Moses as his ideal Cleary replacement<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n<p>&quot;He came in to replace Nathan once and I didn&#x27;t think he was all that bad on the night and would be better for the experience, that&#x27;s just my personal choice, I would be going with him,&quot; Gould told Nine&#x27;s <em>100% Footy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The 2019 Dally M halfback of the year\ufeff likely won&#x27;t get many more chances to wear the blue jersey given Cleary is blocking his representative path, and will be for the rest of his career.<\/p>\n<p>He has never played in the halves alongside Walker, Luai, or Hynes.\ufeff<\/p>\n<h3>MITCHELL MOSES AND CODY WALKER<\/h3>\n<p>If Gould is correct and Moses is the leading contender to replace Cleary, the Blues could be looking at a complete halves revamp.<\/p>\n<p>The Walker-Mitchell combination can hold up just as well whether the No.7 is Hynes, Reynolds, or Mitchell.<\/p>\n<p>A strength of Moses&#x27; \ufeffis his kicking in play, as well as goalkicking which this year has reaped a 79 per cent success rate for the Eels.<\/p>\n<p>He&#x27;s a right-side dominant player at club level, and could leave Walker to control the left-edge attack for the Blues.\ufeff<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>For a daily dose of the best of the breaking news and exclusive content from Wide World of Sports, subscribe to our newsletter by<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/login.nine.com.au\/edm?client_id=wwos&amp;redirect_uri=https:\/\/wwos.nine.com.au&amp;newsletter=true\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>clicking here<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em><strong>!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>New South Wales selectors are scrambling to come up with a new halves pairing after Nathan Cleary was ruled out of Origin II.
