In the wake of Jason Ryles<\/a>' shock rejection of the Dragons coaching role<\/a>, chief executive Ryan Webb has confirmed the club is in talks with Shane Flanagan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Flanagan's name has been thrown around as a potential candidate for the job well before Anthony Griffin<\/a> was sacked last month.<\/p>\n

Speaking on 2GB's Continuous Call Team on Saturday, Webb said Flanagan's name was "one of a few".<\/p>\n

"There isn't a name that's off the table. The different candidates that remain, we've touched base with quite a number of them before, (but) in the last week or two, we focused in on Jason.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"All the candidates that remain now, we'll pick them back up, but there isn't anyone that's excluded.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"(Flanagan) is a name in that group, but he's one of a few."<\/p>\n

One of the obstacles remaining between Flanagan and the Dragons job is Peter Doust.<\/p>\n

The former Dragons chief executive is known to not be a fan of Flanagan. Webb denied suggestions Doust was an "agitator" on the Dragons board.<\/p>\n

"Peter Doust is one of eight directors that I report to, (and) whenever I \u2026 have to report or get direction, it's from a board of eight and ultimately the chairman Andrew Lancaster," he said.<\/p>\n

"So I couldn't say \u2026 Peter is there influencing things in a bad way. I couldn't say that at all. He's one of eight directors that I have to take leadership from."<\/p>\n

Last month, Flanagan told 2GB he would wait for the Dragons to come to him<\/a>, rather than him being the chaser.<\/p>\n

He also said he wasn't aware of any bad blood between himself and Doust.<\/p>\n

Webb conceded Jason Ryles' decision not to take up the top coaching role caught bosses by surprise.<\/p>\n

Ryles was short-priced favourite for the job, but confirmed on Monday he would move to Melbourne for his second stint as an assistant under Craig Bellamy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He's expected to move into the top job when Bellamy eventually calls time.<\/p>\n

"Jason Ryles' decision to not take up the role earlier in the week was not something we were expecting, and we thought we're progressing well."<\/p>\n

The Dragons will take on the Panthers on Sunday night.<\/p>\n
