Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar Series<\/a> owner Roger Penske says a wheel flying over a catch fence and into a car park is "very concerning" and will be investigated.<\/p>\n

The left rear wheel of Kyle Kirkwood's car came loose after he slammed into the side of Felix Rosenqvist's car when it spun out of control.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident after the wheel narrowly avoided a packed grandstand and landed on a car.<\/p>\n

The incident raised eyebrows given the rarity of such incidents and preventative measures put in place.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wheels are connected to the car by tethers which can sustain nearly 10,000 kilograms of force.<\/p>\n

"I saw what had happened; saw it bounced on top of a building and went and hit a car over there, which obviously is very concerning," said Penske.<\/p>\n

"We have tethers on the wheels, and it was a rear wheel that came off, and I'm sure the guys at IndyCar will look at it, will determine what really happened.<\/p>\n

"We haven't seen a wheel come off in a long time. We have high fences here. But we were very fortunate we didn't have a bad accident."<\/p>\n

IndyCar officials subsequently put out a statement confirming the incident would be investigated.<\/p>\n

Organisers suggested the scary scenes were a freak incident.<\/p>\n

"IndyCar takes the safety of the drivers and fans very seriously. We are pleased and thankful that no one was hurt," read a category statement.<\/p>\n

"As a series known for innovation, for the last 24 years, IndyCar has mandated a wheel suspension tether (energy management system), which uses high-performance Zylon material.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It can withstand a force of over 22,000 pounds. IndyCar was the first sanctioning body in the United States to require its use.<\/p>\n

"IndyCar is in possession of the tyre involved in yesterday's incident and has found that the tether did not fail.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"This is an isolated incident and the series is reviewing to make sure it does not happen again."<\/p>\n

Although rare, it's not the first time a wheel and tyre have made it over the catch fence at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.<\/p>\n

During the 71st running of the Indianapolis 500 in 1987, a wheel from Tony Bettenhausen Jr's car came loose and bounced off of Roberto Guerrero's nose, which flew into a grandstand and killed a spectator.<\/p>\n

Kirkwood and Rosenqvist were uninjured in the crash.<\/p>\n

Kirkwood's hit with the wall that flipped him onto his side reportedly registered nearly 80G.<\/p>\n
