Last year's Indianapolis 500<\/a> winner Marcus Ericsson has lashed a decisive call that deprived him of back-to-back titles.<\/p>\n

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver was in contention for the lion's share of the famed 200-lap race and led when the race was stopped for the third time.<\/p>\n

That came after a four-car pile-up on the front straight involving Benjamin Pedersen, Marco Andretti, Christian Lundgaard, and the series' sole car owner-driver Ed Carpenter.<\/p>\n

The red flag was drawn with just two laps left in IndyCar's<\/a> crown jewel event.<\/p>\n

Typically, in the instance of a red flag, the cars would roll out and complete at least one full warm-up lap before taking the green flag the next time across the start-finish line.<\/p>\n

However, in this instance, the cars rolled out of pit lane and took the green flag the first time they crossed the start-finish line.<\/p>\n

Ericsson led the restart and held the advantage into turn one before Team Penske's Josef Newgarden went to the Swede's outside and took the lead into turn three.<\/p>\n

The ex-Formula 1 driver sought to slipstream Newgarden down the front straight to the chequered flag, but could only come within 0.09s at the line and had to settle for second.<\/p>\n

Ironically, Newgarden used one of Ericsson's own moves on him as he zig-zagged across the track to try and break the tow \u2013 a ploy the Ganassi driver famously used on Pato O'Ward to win in 2022.<\/p>\n

Ericsson couldn't hide his frustration, directing his grievances directly at IndyCar race officials.<\/p>\n

"I just thought it was an unfair and dangerous end to the race," he said.<\/p>\n

"I don't think it was enough laps to do what we did. I think we've never done a restart out of the pits and, you know, we don't get the tyres up to temperature.<\/p>\n

"I think we did everything right today. I'm very proud of the No.8 crew and everyone at Chip Ganassi Racing.<\/p>\n

"I think I did everything right behind the wheel. I did an awesome last restart, I think I caught Josef completely off-guard and got the gap and kept the lead into turn one, which no one has done all day, but I just couldn't hold it on the back. I was flat, but I couldn't hold it."<\/p>\n

"I'm proud of us. Congratulations to Josef; he did everything right as well, so he's a worthy champion, but I'm just very disappointed with the way that that ended. I don't think that was fair.<\/p>\n

"Again, I feel like we did everything right, I feel like we won that race and then it sort of got taken away from us," he added.<\/p>\n

"It is what it is, the situation is what it is. I think I did everything right on that last restart, I think that was awesome, but it was just not enough today with what we had, so it's tough to swallow, for sure."<\/p>\n

The finish evoked memories of similar scenes in Formula 1 when Lewis Hamilton famously lost the 2021 world championship to Max Verstappen in a one-lap dash in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n

In that instance, a safety car was called and Verstappen pitted for new tyres while Hamilton stayed out. A call was made to let the lapped cars in between the pair un-lap themselves, setting up a two-way tussle for the title that ultimately fell Verstappen's way.<\/p>\n
