A terrifying crash brought the Indianapolis 500<\/a> to a grinding halt with just 14 laps to go when a wheel flew out of the race track.<\/p>\n

America's Josef Newgarden had just overtaken Sweden's Felix Rosenqvist in turn one when his car began to understeer.<\/p>\n

As the McLaren driver got up into the dirty part of the race track, understeer turned to oversteer as the rear of his car stepped out.<\/p>\n

Rosenqvist slapped the wall, which broke the right side suspension and made the car uncontrollable.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old tried to get away from the racing line but the car spun and went backwards and into the path of the pack.<\/p>\n

AJ Foyt Racing's Santino Ferrucci narrowly avoided Rosenqvist but Kyle Kirkwood couldn't.<\/p>\n

That contact sent the Andretti Autosport driver into a spin before he lopped around and slapped the outside barrier, which sent his car up onto its side.<\/p>\n

Such was the ferocity of the contact that one of Kirkwood's wheels tore off and flew over the catch fence and into an adjacent car park.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, no spectators were injured although a car was left damaged after the tyre landed on it.<\/p>\n

"I just got passed by\u2026 I don't know who it was, but I got on the wrong side of the wake and just push, push, push, push," said Rosenqvist of the accident.<\/p>\n

"I almost got it but the rear came out right before the exit of the corner and then I just hit the wall. <\/p>\n

"I tried to stay up there but eventually something broke in the rear and I just came back on the track and unfortunately Kyle hit me. <\/p>\n

"Unfortunate for him as well. We had a helluva race, man."<\/p>\n

Kirkwood was thankful for the safety innovations but understandably frustrated having put himself in contention to win.<\/p>\n

"Everything happened so quick," he explained.<\/p>\n

"Thank God these cars are so safe because right now it could have been a lot worse based on exactly what just happened there.<\/p>\n

"I could see the sparks flying everywhere. That was the scary part because no is getting to me and I'm upside down and you're kind of stuck at that point.<\/p>\n

"We felt like were going to win it. We were just driving through cars in that second\ufeff-to-last stint. Glad I'm okay, glad the car was super fast, but disappointed in that finish, no doubt."<\/p>\n
