Australia's Thanasi Kokkinakis<\/a>\ufeff overcame a disgruntled British rival to break an eight-year Roland-Garros<\/a> drought on Sunday night (AEST).\ufeff<\/p>\n

Heading into his clash with Dan Evans, Kokkinakis hadn't won a singles match in the main draw of a Roland-Garros tournament since 2015, but he defeated the Englishman 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.<\/p>\n

A spicy moment saw Evans explode after being called for a foot fault while 30-0 up during the seventh game of the second set.<\/p>\n

The 20th seed unravelled mentally and let a potential break of serve slip, before unloading on the chair umpire.<\/p>\n

After slamming the decision as a "joke" in his takedown of the official, he smashed a plastic water bottle.<\/p>\n

He was then slapped with a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, which triggered another verbal outburst.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Kokkinakis eventually sealed his victory when Evans hit a long forehand, prompting a roar from the underdog.<\/p>\n

Australian tennis great Todd Woodbridge had high praise for Kokkinakis\ufeff.<\/p>\n

"I thought he came out of the blocks really well, very steady," Woodbridge said on Nine's coverage.<\/p>\n

"He knows a lot about Dan Evans and the way that he plays.<\/p>\n

"What he did enormously well today was he stopped the Englishman from \ufeffexecuting what he does well, and that's to dictate the play by trying to jump forward.<\/p>\n

"His ball off the forehand was just too heavy and he served incredibly well, which allows him to then be able to use the forehand.<\/p>\n

"That's a great match from Thanasi and he'll build confidence from that one."<\/p>\n

In the second round at Roland-Garros, Kokkinakis will face the winner of Swiss champion Stan Wawrinka and Spanish veteran Albert Ramos Vinolas\ufeff.<\/p>\n
