Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes<\/a> says it's time the AFL<\/a> took a harder stance on staging by penalising those who play up for free kicks in-game.<\/p>\n

This week, leading NBA journalist Shams Charania\ufeff reported that the league's competition committee was weighing up the introduction of in-game penalties for staging, including a technical foul free throw.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Nine's AFL Sunday Footy Show<\/em><\/a>,<\/em> Cornes rubber-stamped the idea and suggested the AFL follow suit.<\/p>\n

This was, however, met with an exasperated sigh from \ufeffhost Tony Jones.<\/p>\n

"I'm sick of people like you, who want to bring Americanisms into our game," Jones said.<\/p>\n

But \ufeffCornes disagreed.<\/p>\n

"Well I don't care because I'm sick of this," \ufeffhe said as vision played of St Kilda<\/a> forward Max King benefiting from a 50m penalty after flopping for an off-ball free kick during Saturday's 10-point loss to Hawthorn<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The incident in the first quarter saw King initiate contact with \ufeffHawks defender James Blanck before tumbling to the ground after being "brushed" by Blanck in return.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffIn a close game, that is [rewarded with] a 50m penalty and a guaranteed goal," Cornes said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffNow Max King – I'm not critical of him because the umpire is giving him a free kick for it."<\/p>\n

Cornes argued the AFL needs to to do more to rid the game of the act.<\/p>\n

\"Max<\/p>\n

"We've got to stamp it out – that should be a free kick against King and that should go to Hawthorn, rather than rewarding that sort of action.<\/p>\n

"It frustrates \ufefffans, it frustrates everyone. We've got to get it out of the game [and] it's easy to do – just penalise [players who flop], pay a free kick against them and the players will stop doing it."<\/p>\n

Jones then raised the game's existing financial penalties for staging before Damien Barrett interjected.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI'm with Kane on this," Barrett said.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffMax in the heat of the moment went down but he's not going to be proud of that one I would have thought."<\/p>\n

Dual All-Australian Nathan Brown added, "\ufeffThe onus is on the umpire, and the onus is now on the AFL and (match review officer) Michael Christian to come out and fine the players that have done it".<\/p>\n

Cornes agreed that players should continue to be charged and fined as a deterrent but \ufeffcontended that an in-game penalty should also be handed down.<\/p>\n
