Queensland Reds<\/a> lock Connor Vest has had his season ended prematurely after breaking his neck in an ugly tackle.<\/p>\n

The injury came in the team's agonising, last-minute defeat to the Highlanders<\/a> in Dunedin on Friday in round 14 of Super Rugby Pacific<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Vest went down in the 29th minute after an awkward clash with No.6 flanker Shannon Frizell.<\/p>\n

Although the No.5 was able to walk from the field, he was later taken to hospital where he was assessed and found to have suffered a break.<\/p>\n

It was Vest's third straight start with the Reds this season.<\/p>\n

"Queensland Reds lock Connor Vest has suffered a fractured neck against the Highlanders in round 14 of Super Rugby Pacific," a statement from the team read.<\/p>\n

"Vest left the field following a tackle in the 29th minute and did not return.<\/p>\n

"He was admitted to the Dunedin Hospital last night where a CT scan revealed a fracture of his C7 vertebrae.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"He will return home tomorrow for further assessment and specialist opinions before any further decisions are made on the management of his injury.<\/p>\n

"We wish Connor all the best in his recovery."<\/p>\n

The tackle went unsighted by the match officials, despite contact with the head.<\/p>\n

It was a bruising affair for the Reds, who also lost captain Tate McDermott and co-captain Liam Wright to injury.<\/p>\n

Wright suffered a dislocated shoulder in his seventh-minute try while McDermott went off with a concussion.<\/p>\n

The Reds will likely be without the duo when they head to Fiji for their final round of the regular season on Saturday, June 3.<\/p>\n
