Hawthorn<\/a> chief executive Justin Reeves has resigned from his position at the club effective immediately.<\/p>\n

Reeves confirmed his departure during a meeting with the club's board on Wednesday, citing his mental health and well-being as a reason.<\/p>\n

In a statement on Wednesday afternoon, the club confirmed that Reeves had resigned.<\/p>\n

He had been under immense pressure with the ongoing AFL<\/a> investigation into allegations of historical racism at Hawthorn.<\/p>\n

"Reeves will step down from the role effective immediately due to the personal toll and the need to focus on his wellbeing in what has been a very difficult period for the club," the statement read.<\/p>\n

Chief commercial officer Ash Klein has been appointed as acting CEO, with the board to form a sub-committee to oversee the search for Reeves' replacement.<\/p>\n

Hawks president Andy Gowers said while he is disappointed to see Reeves depart the club, he respects his decision to prioritise his mental health and time with his family.<\/p>\n

"Justin is a highly respected sporting executive, which is a reputation built from delivering great results and running sound operations for more than 15 years in AFL football," he said.<\/p>\n

"On behalf of the board, I thank Justin for his unwavering commitment to the Hawks over nearly six years, during which there have been some challenging periods that required astute leadership."<\/p>\n

Reeves spent over five years as the Hawks' CEO, replacing Tracey Gaudry in October 2017.<\/p>\n

During his tenure, Reeves handled the botched succession plan between Alastair Clarkson and Sam Mitchell<\/a>, the volatile change of presidency from Jeff Kennett to Gowers<\/a> and the reconstruction of the club's list in the wake of their three successive premierships.<\/p>\n

In recent months, Reeves managed the external review into the experiences of First Nations players at Hawthorn<\/a> and the subsequent AFL inquiry engrossing former Hawks staffers Alastair Clarkson, Chris Fagan and Jason Burt.<\/p>\n

In his reasoning, Reeves told the board the time was right for him to step away from his position and make way for new leadership at the club.<\/p>\n

"I've worked hard with my team to establish strong foundations for the club to work through some important cultural, strategic and operational matters and, with that work done, I'm confident the club can emerge stronger than ever," he said.<\/p>\n

"I believe now is the right time to hand over to new leadership. I'm confident my departure will allow the board to identify a new CEO to lead our incredibly talented executive team, to ensure future club sustainability and success and support club coaches Sam Mitchell and Bec Goddard.<\/p>\n

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to lead Hawthorn and thank the club's ever-so-talented employees, loyal members and committed commercial partners."<\/p>\n

Reeves' decision to leave Hawthorn comes a week after current North Melbourne coach Clarkson stood down indefinitely<\/a> due to the stress of both the club's struggles and the AFL's extended investigation.<\/p>\n
