Japanese manufacturer Honda will return to Formula 1<\/a> after agreeing to an engine supply partnership with Aston Martin.<\/p>\n

Under the new deal, \ufeffHonda will supply the British constructor with power units compliant with the sport's new regulations which will come into effect for 2026.<\/p>\n

Honda formally departed F1 in 2021 after helping Red Bull's Max Verstappen claim the first of his consecutive titles.<\/p>\n

However, \ufeffthe company continued to supply Red Bull with power units under the "Red Bull Powertrains" moniker and will continue to do so until their supply deal ends at the end of the 2025 season.<\/p>\n

Until now, Honda's long-term future in F1 \ufeffhad been unclear after Red Bull pledged itself to Ford for its own powertrains<\/a> after its current deal expires.<\/p>\n

However, with Aston Martin's impressive start to this season, combined with its own deal with Mercedes finishing up at the end of 2025, the Silverstone-based team was a solid option.<\/p>\n

Ironically, it could see two bitter rivals reunite.<\/p>\n

Should Aston Martin re-sign Fernando Alonso, it would mark the first time since 2017 that the Spaniard and Honda have worked together.<\/p>\n

After Honda returned to F1 for the first time since the late 2000s with McLaren, Alonso had a strained relationship with the manufacturer from 2015 to 2017 in which he went winless.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Alonso was very public in his disdain, and although a reunion hasn't been formalised, Honda says it has moved on in any case.<\/p>\n

Honda went on to win the F1 title with Red Bull after parting company with McLaren, something the company recognised during Wednesday's announcement.<\/p>\n

Current Honda CEO Toshiro Mibe said "the past is the past" and that he would "leave it to the team".<\/p>\n

Such was the \ufeffrocky relationship that Honda refused to supply Alonso upon returning to the Indianapolis 500 in 2019.<\/p>\n

"We have been accelerating our development during our recent time in Formula 1 while working with Alonso, and that enabled us to win the world championship," said Honda Racing Corporation president Koji Watanabe.<\/p>\n

"The selection of drivers is up to the team to decide. So, if the team decides we'll have Alonso as a driver again, we will have no objections whatsoever on him driving."<\/p>\n

"We respect him [Alonso] highly," Watanabe said.<\/p>\n

"With respect to the driver selection, I will not say we're not going to be involved in team management whatsoever but the decision of the drivers is up to the team.<\/p>\n

"Of course, we will be giving them suggestions or input."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Alonso is said to be contracted through to the end of 2024 but has given rise to the possibility of an extension. \ufeff<\/p>\n
