A terrifying crash in practice for the Indianapolis 500<\/a> has ruled Stefan Wilson out of the race after suffering a broken back.<\/p>\n

Katherine Legge, the only female driver in the race, ran into the back of her English compatriot during Tuesday morning's practice after a pack of cars began to slow through turn one.<\/p>\n

Wilson and Legge slammed into the outside barrier, resulting in significant damage to both cars.<\/p>\n

Stan Sport is the only place to watch the 2023 IndyCar Series, featuring Will Power, Scott McLaughlin and Scott Dixon.<\/strong><\/em> All the action streaming ad free, live and on demand<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

After a lengthy delay, Wilson was put on a stretcher and taken to hospital where it was discovered he'd suffered a fracture to the 12th thoracic vertebrae.<\/p>\n

The 33-year-old will remain in hospital overnight for further tests and observation.<\/p>\n

It means he'll miss the race, but his Dreyer & Reinbold Racing\/Cusick Motorsports team could replace him.<\/p>\n

"The cars in front were all checking up, I lifted as much as I could and downshifted, hit the brakes but it wasn't enough as they were checking up," said Legge.<\/p>\n

"I got into the back of Stefan and we both ended up in the wall."<\/p>\n

Wilson had qualified 25th for the race on Sunday in what was to be his fifth Indianapolis 500 start. Legge, who qualified 30th for the race, was uninjured.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It stands to reason Graham Rahal could slip into the No.24 entry having not qualified for the race.<\/p>\n

There were emotional scenes on Monday when the driver of the No.15 car failed to make the show after his Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing teammate Jack Harvey bumped him out<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Legge lamented the crash after the team found itself with three of its four cars in the last-chance qualifier on Monday.<\/p>\n

"It's another blow to the team after yesterday," she said of the crash, referencing the lacklustre qualifying.<\/p>\n

"Those guys don't deserve it, it's not right."<\/p>\n

JR Hildebrand is another name in the mix with ties to the team. He famously crashed out of the race in 2011 while leading on the last lap as a rookie, gifting Dan Wheldon victory.<\/p>\n

The team said it would have more news on its participation in the race "in due course".<\/p>\n

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing were reportedly preparing a back-up car while damage to Legge's entry wasn't bad enough to necessitate a chassis switch.<\/p>\n

Tuesday's two-hour session was led by Australian Will Power for Team Penske ahead of New Zealand's Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing.<\/p>\n

The 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 gets underway on Monday, May 29 at 1am (AEST).<\/p>\n
