AFL boss Gillon McLachlan spoke to Eddie McGuire yesterday following the Collingwood president's much-criticised media conference<\/a>, where he declared the damning report into racism at the club was a "proud" day.<\/a><\/p>\n

Despite a 35-page report that declared racism at the club was systemic, McGuire fronted a media conference on Monday declaring Collingwood would be a "leading light in our community" when it comes to ending discrimination.<\/p>\n

He's since apologised for those remarks, admitting he "got it wrong."<\/a><\/p>\n

The Age has revealed McLachlan spoke to McGuire yesterday, with the AFL boss clearly unhappy over the choice of words.<\/p>\n

"I think the articulation of the report yesterday was challenging and certainly there were some questions I asked Ed," McLachlan said.<\/p>\n

"His articulation I didn't agree with, and I think yesterday was a sobering and confronting day and we had that conversation.<\/p>\n

"I was pretty up front because I wanted to understand that word [proud] because it is not a word I would use \u2026. it was [a] more sobering and confronting [day]. I did talk to that word, yes."<\/p>\n

But McLachlan refused to buy into the debate over whether or not McGuire should stand down from his post early, with the Magpies president having already confirmed he'll leave at the end of the season.<\/p>\n

"These are not decisions for me, it is for Ed and the board and the Collingwood supporters," McLachlan said.<\/p>\n

"It is going to require a whole football club [effort] to deliver on this. This is a serious undertaking that is going to require the whole board, the footy department and it makes commitments on behalf of its supporters.<\/p>\n

"This has never been about an individual, it needs to be a whole-of-club approach and whole-of-industry approach to deliver on it.<\/p>\n

At last night's Collingwood AGM, McGuire admitted he hadn't meant to portray the club's past as something to be proud of.<\/p>\n

Over the course of an hour, we answered every question, but in my opening, I got it wrong," McGuire said on the Zoom call.<\/p>\n

"I said it was a proud day for Collingwood – and I shouldn't have."<\/p>\n

"Under the pressure of the day, the use of the word 'proud' was wrong.<\/p>\n

"I did not mean we were proud of past incidents of racism and the hurt that it had caused.<\/p>\n

"It's been interpreted widely that way and I regret that deeply."<\/p>\n
