Three decades after his father failed to qualify for the Indianapolis 500<\/a>, Graham Rahal has felt the same dreaded emotions at the Brickyard.<\/p>\n

Dubbed the Greatest Spectacle In Racing, qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 is just as iconic as the 200-lap affair itself.<\/p>\n

The IndyCar<\/a> race is unique in that cars must qualify to make it into the race, with the grid capped at 33 cars.<\/p>\n

Stan Sport is the only place to watch the 2023 IndyCar Series, featuring Will Power, Scott McLaughlin and Scott Dixon.<\/strong><\/em> All the action streaming ad free, live and on demand<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

This year, 34 cars entered the race meaning 'Bump Day' qualifying returned to the schedule whereby the slowest four cars fight for the final spot on the grid.<\/p>\n

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing struggled in qualifying and found its cars near the back.<\/p>\n

In the end, three of its four drivers were forced to partake in the last-chance qualifier alongside Dale Coyne Racing's Sting Ray Robb.<\/p>\n

After the first run of qualifying, Denmark's Christian Lundgaard led the way ahead of American duo Robb and Rahal.<\/p>\n

Englishman Jack Harvey's first run put him last of the four drivers and provisionally out of the race.<\/p>\n

After a lengthy wait in the hour-long session, Harvey ventured out onto the course to improve his time but couldn't eclipse Rahal.<\/p>\n

Despite being slowest, there was a glimmer of hope for Harvey who told his team he'd have a last-ditch effort with two minutes to go.<\/p>\n

The team bolted on new tyres and sent him on his way.<\/p>\n

His first lap wasn't as quick as Rahal's first, but over the four-lap average Harvey did just enough to better the IndyCar veteran of 16 starts in the Indianapolis 500.<\/p>\n

In the end, Harvey bested Rahal by a mere 0.11 km\/h (0.07 mph).<\/p>\n

Rahal, sat in his car with no more time to respond, could only embrace his crew as the reality of the situation dawned on him.<\/p>\n

It was a case of history repeating itself. Three decades prior his father Bobby Rahal suffered the same experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"That's the difficult part \u2013 you can't do anything, you can't run again, you're kind of stuck there," said Rahal.<\/p>\n

"As I said to these guys, you've just got to be positive and everybody puts a lot into this, we just came up short.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I felt like Jack, in those laps, surprised. I think with the heat soak I'm really surprised, but you've got to be\u2026 this place, it doesn't come easy and it doesn't just happen and we weren't good enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We were the slowest of our cars just on pure pace all week. Unfortunately, that happens. You've got to be positive, you've got to be humble and gracious in victory and defeat, just not this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I knew from the start we were in trouble," Rahal concluded as he fought back tears, walking away to his car.<\/p>\n

It was a bittersweet moment for Harvey having knocked his teammates out of the great race.<\/p>\n

Harvey came into this year's Indianapolis 500 the subject of rumours his time at the team was coming to an end.<\/p>\n

"I don't even know what to say mate, honestly," said Harvey.<\/p>\n

"It's a huge effort by the No.30 car. The guys worked really hard to make this possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I think it's no secret it's been a struggle and can see our first two runs in qualifying weren't awesome.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The hope was that all three of our cars could make it. I hate that it was us that bumped Graham out but I'm grateful to be in the race.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"This is such a privilege to be able to do this in the first place.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"The stress of Bump Day is absolutely real but it doesn't change my love for this place. I absolutely love it and just grateful to be here.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Just the format of this, again, it kind of sucks. We got three efforts, none of the other cars even got one (more), which I guess is testament that they have a better first run than us.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's an amazing feeling and an awful feeling at the same time."<\/p>\n
