Alex Palou will start the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500<\/a> from pole position, setting a new four-lap average record in the process.<\/p>\n

The Spaniard clocked a 376.935 km\/h (234.217 mph) to beat Chip Ganassi Racing stablemate Scott Dixon's previous record \u2013 a 376.661 km\/h (234.046 mph) set in 2022.<\/p>\n

Palou led Ed Carpenter Racing's Rinus VeeKay in qualifying, the pair split by an extraordinary 0.09 km\/h (0.06 mph).<\/p>\n

Stan Sport is the only place to watch the 2023 IndyCar Series, featuring Will Power, Scott McLaughlin and Scott Dixon.<\/strong><\/em> All the action streaming ad free, live and on demand<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

The Spaniard, who leads the IndyCar Series<\/a> standings after five races, hailed the efforts of his team.<\/p>\n

"It means the world to me, to the boys, to everybody," said Palou.<\/p>\n

"We knew it was going to be tight. It was really tight, but the No.10 crew did an amazing job."<\/p>\n

Although disappointed not to score pole position, VeeKay could see the lighter side of his situation.<\/p>\n

"I got everything out of it, just wish I had a little bit more, it's so tight," he said.<\/p>\n

"I should have took a dump before this practice or had less lunch.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's so close. I think we really had a shot for pole position but also I'm a bit spoiled to say that.<\/p>\n

"P2, still very happy, we don't win anything with this. This is only the start of the race."<\/p>\n

A blistering 376.717 km\/h ( 234.081 mph) effort \u2013 the only 234 mph run in the top 12 \u2013 from McLaren's Felix Rosenqvist saw him go into the Fast Six as the bonafide favourite for pole position, but he only wound up third with a 376.769 km\/h (234.114 mph) average.<\/p>\n

AJ Foyt Racing's Santino Ferrucci scored his best Indianapolis 500 start in fourth, bettering last year's career-high 15th place on the grid.<\/p>\n

Rosenqvist's teammate Pato O'Ward will line up fifth alongside Palou's off-sider Dixon.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the day, positions seven through 12 were locked in with McLaren's Alexander Rossi narrowly missing out on a Fast Six berth.<\/p>\n

Takuma Sato (Chip Ganassi Racing), Tony Kanaan (McLaren), Marcus Ericsson (Chip Ganassi Racing), Benjamin Pedersen (AJ Foyt Racing), and Will Power (Team Penske) occupied eighth through 12th.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Sunday, positions 13 through 30 were locked in. Notables included Scott McLaughlin who was 14th for Team Penske and ex-Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean in 19th.<\/p>\n

Of the part-time entries, 2014 Indianapolis 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay was 18th for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.<\/p>\n

Marco Andretti was only 24th for Andretti Autosport just ahead of fellow part-timer Stefan Wilson in another Dreyer & Reinbold Racing entry.<\/p>\n

RC Enerson and Katherine Legge were both shock inclusions in the 30, qualifying 29th and 30th respectively to avoid the last-chance qualifier.<\/p>\n

Graham Rahal found himself bumped out of qualifying by Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing teammate Jack Harvey in dramatic circumstances.<\/p>\n

An unlikely third run saw Harvey pip Rahal by a mere 0.11 km\/h (0.07 mph) across the four-lap average to snag the final spot on the 33-car grid.<\/p>\n
