Blues great Andrew Johns<\/a> has admitted that Nicho Hynes<\/a> would be NSW's starting five-eighth if he played his club football for Penrith alongside Nathan Cleary<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The decision between Hynes and the Blues' incumbent No.6, Panthers' five-eighth Jarome Luai<\/a>, is arguably the biggest selection headache facing NSW coach Brad Fittler<\/a> ahead of the series opener.<\/p>\n

Hynes, the reigning Dally M medallist, has been outstanding for Cronulla this season \ufeffand is many people's pick to partner Cleary in the halves for the Origin opener.<\/p>\n

However, Luai has responded to the prospect of losing his starting spot in fine fashion over the last two weeks to keep his name in the race.<\/p>\n

Johns admitted that Luai was likely to get the nod because of his combination with Cleary.<\/p>\n

"If Nicho Hynes was \ufeffplaying at Penrith … I think he'd be the five-eighth," he told Wide World of Sports' Immortal Behaviour<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"What Jarome has in his advantage is he's been there before and he's played well.<\/p>\n

"I know last series wasn't his best, but the combinations between Nathan, Isaah Yeo, even Api Koroisau, if he's there, he played at Penrith for a long time.<\/p>\n

"When Latrell (Mitchell) was there a couple of years ago, that edge was just dynamite and there are times where Jarome got the ball and just kept throwing to Latrell, they couldn't get a hand on him.<\/p>\n

"For me personally, Jarome will be the six and Nicho will \ufeffwear that jersey 14."<\/p>\n

Another Panther that was in contention to be named in Fittler's squad before a gruesome injury was Spencer Leniu.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe 22-year-old was ruled out of the Origin opener due to a ruptured testicle, but Johns predicted a bright future for him at the rep level.<\/p>\n

"He's made for Origin off the bench, he's so explosive," he said.<\/p>\n

"What you need when you bring your bench players on after 20-25 minutes is you need them to increase the speed of the game, and that's what Spencer does, he carries the ball really strong.<\/p>\n

"He'll be there moving forward. In the next two to four years you're going to be having players like Spencer, Keaon Koloamatangi, (Haumole) Olakau'atu, they're really explosive players that you just can't handle."<\/p>\n
