Port Adelaide<\/a> youngster Zak Butters has announced himself as one of the genuine stars of the AFL<\/a> after a phenomenal performance helped his side over Melbourne<\/a> in a thriller.<\/p>\n

Butters was instrumental as Port Adelaide withstood a furious seven-goal third quarter from the Demons before steadying in the final term to run out 11. 14. (80) \ufeffto 11. 10. (76) winners<\/a> in driving rain at the Adelaide Oval.<\/p>\n

The 22-year-old tallied a remarkable 41 disposals (18 contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and two goals as he almost single-handedly outduelled a high-powered Demons midfield brigade.<\/p>\n

\ufeffButters' performance left a number of AFL greats in awe, with Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd<\/a> calling it "one of the greatest individual games you're ever likely to see".<\/p>\n

Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon was also stunned by Butters' impact, calling the performance "a game for the ages".<\/p>\n

\ufeff"R\ufeffarely have we seen a more dominant game from a midfielder," he said on Fox Footy's coverage.<\/p>\n

"You always judge the games against the opposition you play. You can get 40 against some teams that are battling … when you walk out here and you see Viney, Petracca, Oliver in the middle of the ground and you walk off with 40 plus, then you've arrived as a footballer.<\/p>\n

"He had already, but we're talking the real sharp, pointy end of the talent pool in Zak Butters."<\/p>\n

What made Butters' performance even more impressive was his clean use of the football in difficult conditions, with the Port star operating at a ridiculous 78 per cent disposal efficiency throughout the match.<\/p>\n

"\ufeff\ufeffWe mentioned him pre-game, he's the hottest player in the competition in the last four games," former Hawks and Demons star Jordan Lewis added.<\/p>\n

"He had that track record and showed consistency, but tonight against the opposition … he was the reason why they were in that game at three-quarter time.<\/p>\n

"He was unbelievable. In a game where it rained for three quarters, he was clean.<\/p>\n

"It was a genuine 40-possession game, there was no handball receives around the back, he went and got his own ball and used it unbelievably well."<\/p>\n

Butters was well-assisted by fellow youngster Connor Rozee who finished with 31 disposals and the eventual game-winning goal four minutes out from the final siren.<\/p>\n

In a frantic stretch of play, Rozee snapped the ball through in heavy traffic after a stupendous one-handed groundball pick up and handball from Jason Horne-Francis, who finished the match with 23 disposals (12 contested) and a goal of his own.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe win is Port Adelaide's seventh in a row and puts the team in second position, four ahead of the Demons.<\/p>\n
