World number 19 golfer Tom Kim has explained the circumstances behind a hilarious moment during his first round<\/a> in the PGA Championship<\/a> at Oak Hill, with footage capturing \ufeffthe South Korean emerging from the water full of mud.<\/p>\n

Competing on the sixth hole, Kim was walking to his ball after a poor shot and went into the water to try and find his ball.<\/p>\n

Upon hopping out of the water, the 20-year-old was captured with mud all over his legs, shirt and trousers. \ufeff<\/p>\n

After the day was suspended due to darkness, Kim explained his decision to go to extreme lengths to find his ball. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI was told my ball crossed the water and it was just in the mud over there … if it had a good enough fly I was thinking I could chip it over there … as soon as I went in it was kind of sketch but it's a major championship, I'm fighting for every single stroke I have and it got dark," he told ESPN+.<\/p>\n

"Once my foot got in I was like there's no looking back, I went full in, got my shirt and everything (dirty). There was one point where I just sunk in … I couldn't get myself out, I called (caddie) Joe (Skovron) and he said 'well if I go in I sink, so both of us aren't getting out'.<\/p>\n

"I had to crawl, I had to use every part of my body to get out, I've had better days."<\/p>\n

After his disaster in the mud, the cameras then stayed on Kim as he ventured back into the water. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"It couldn't get any worse, I was wet enough so I thought I might as well just go in the water and wash myself off," he laughed.<\/p>\n

Overall Kim had a day to forget, shooting a three-over-par to sit equal 63rd.<\/p>\n

\ufeffDespite his misfortune, the South Korean wanted to emphasise he was determined to do everything he could to shoot the best possible round.<\/p>\n

"It could've been a lot better that's for sure, I hung \ufeffin there, especially what happened on that hole I was able to finish around even par and give myself a few looks," he said.<\/p>\n

"I hope everyone at home understands it's a major championship, I'm trying to play the best I can and every shot matters so I definitely went full in.<\/p>\n

"It didn't really help, I didn't find my ball, I went through all that but it was a great experience."<\/p>\n

American Eric Cole leads the field at five-under while Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson trail close behind.<\/p>\n
