Premiership-winning coach Mick Malthouse<\/a> has come out in support of North Melbourne<\/a> coach Alastair Clarkson after he decided to step aside from the role<\/a> indefinitely in the wake of an investigation into treatment of Indigenous players<\/a> during his time as Hawthorn coach.<\/p>\n

Last week Clarkson was critical of the Hawks' handling of the racism review, labelling it a "circus" as the investigation drags on.<\/p>\n

"There's one particular party out there that was the catalyst for all this, that haven't been investigated at all," he said.<\/p>\n

"Their governance and conduct in this whole thing, the Hawthorn Football Club, just shameful.\ufeff"\ufeff<\/p>\n

Malthouse has since described the process "a mess"\ufeff and believes Clarkson and Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan – a former member of the Hawthorn coaching staff – deserve the assumption of innocence.<\/p>\n

"It is a mess, it's unfortunate, I really thought this would have been cleared up a long time ago," he told Nine's Today<\/em> show.<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately in this world we tend to \ufeffaccuse and be found guilty before there's an inquiry … so those two coaches are now wearing that.<\/p>\n

"They go home every night with guilt, assumption of guilt, which should be assumption of innocence … their family have got to console and wear that as well. Unfortunately we tend to think 'Well they're big men, they're strong, they're AFL coaches, they can wear it.'<\/p>\n

"Quite frankly the job itself is tough enough so you put a fa\u00e7ade on every time you enter the football club because you don't want it to affect the players negatively and at home you're wearing it all day. It's not a surprise, unfortunately Alastair is going to have to sit this one out until the AFL at some stage deliver their verdict and I just think it's been far too lengthy."<\/p>\n

Asked whether he thinks Clarkson will return to the AFL coaching arena, Malthouse wasn't certain. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"I think we all hope he does, it's a very interesting one, I thought at the time \ufeffwhen all this came out that it was going to be very, very difficult to coach under those circumstances and until something does come out, he's going to wear mud," he said.<\/p>\n

"Unfortunately when you do that you're going to be a victim of what the crowds think and more importantly it's when you get home, it's how it affects your family.<\/p>\n

"I know Alastair's a very strong family man as is Chris Fagan so it's unfortunate for both of them that it has tailed off like this and they're still waiting for an outcome.<\/p>\n

"I haven't got an answer … does he really want to get back in the cauldron again?"<\/p>\n

In the days following Clarkson's decision, Fagan was scathing of the review in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

"The deeply flawed process that we have been subjected to has taken a heavy toll," he said. "It has been profoundly damaging and unfair."<\/p>\n

Former Hawthorn player Jordan Lewis also revealed on AFL 360 Plus that Clarkson was refused service at a petrol station recently when he had his first layoff at North Melbourne.<\/p>\n

"When the news first broke and he had his first little layoff at North Melbourne, he went down to the coast to get away for a little bit," Lewis explained.<\/p>\n

"He stopped off at a petrol station, the person behind the counter refused to serve him. Because of what these allegations had been about.<\/p>\n

"I don't know how many times in his everyday life that would have happened, but it wears you down. To be accused of what he's been accused of and the other guys, to not be able to speak and tell your version of events, it would be excruciating."<\/p>\n
