World No.1 Iga Swiatek<\/a> is in doubt to defend her Roland-Garros<\/a> title after she was forced to retire from her Italian Open<\/a> quarter-final against Elena Rybakina<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Swiatek injured her right leg during the second set tiebreak, and would return from a medical timeout with her thigh heavily strapped.<\/p>\n

It was 2-2 in the third when the top-ranked Swiatek retired after more than two hours of play.<\/p>\n

In hot and humid conditions, Swiatek took the first set against Rybakina 6-2, and had the chance to go up a double break in the second before the Kazakh rallied to force a tiebreak.<\/p>\n

Rybakina easily won the tiebreaker following Swiatek's injury, although they were 2-2 in the third set when the world No.1 pulled the pin.<\/p>\n

"It's never good to finish the match like this – it was a good match and I hope it's nothing serious for Iga and I wish her a speedy recovery," Rybakina said in her on-court interview.<\/p>\n

The retirement ends Swiatek's 10-match winning streak in Rome.<\/p>\n

It's the third time the big-serving Rybakina has beaten Swiatek this year, accounting for three of the Pole's six losses in 2023.<\/p>\n

Earlier, annoyance in the crowd turned to laughter when a phone began ringing during the game, only for it to become apparent it was Swiatek's.<\/p>\n

After a brief delay, she gave her phone to her coaches box.<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old pole defeated Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 in last year's Roland-Garros final.<\/p>\n

Rybakina's semi-final opponent will be Jelena Ostapenko, who beat Paula Badosa 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to reach her first semi-final on clay since winning the 2017 French Open.<\/p>\n

The other semi-final will feature Veronika Kudermetova of Russia against Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Roland-Garros main draw action will begin on May 28.<\/p>\n
