Legendary fullback Billy Slater<\/a> has endorsed Roosters assistant Jason Ryles for the vacant head coaching gig at the St George Illawarra Dragons<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Red \ufeffV have launched into signing a new coach after sacking Anthony Griffin on Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking on \ufeffNine's The Billy Slater Podcast<\/em><\/a>, Slater was unsure what direction the club would take in choosing Griffin's successor but backed his former teammate Ryles to take the reins.<\/p>\n

"Who they go with from here, \ufeffI'm not too sure," Slater said.<\/p>\n

"I don't know the organisation, I don't know the ins and outs of what is going on internally.<\/p>\n

"I've had a bit to do with Jason Ryles – I played alongside him as a player for the Melbourne Storm and also played under him while he was [an assistant] coach at the Melbourne Storm.<\/p>\n

"He's been at some really successful clubs, he spent some time with English rugby union and Eddie Jones, and he's got that DNA of the Dragons. He's from down in Wollongong, that region, he played for the Dragons.<\/p>\n

"I can't think of \ufeffanyone who would be more suited to that job but at the end of the day, they've got to make that decision because they know their club and they know what their club needs."<\/p>\n

Ryles is contracted to the Tricolours until the end of 2024, however it is understood that the Roosters would not block the 44-year-old back from accepting a head coaching role.<\/p>\n

Earlier reports suggested that the Dragons would need to offer Ryles a long-term deal to obtain his services.<\/p>\n

Last week, the Sydney Morning Herald claimed Ryles desired a five-year deal with full autonomy<\/a> over his roster and assistants – seemingly excessive requests for a rookie coach.<\/p>\n

Ryles had also been linked to the top job at the Melbourne Storm before Craig Bellamy announced that he would stay in the role<\/a> for a 22nd season.<\/p>\n

The Dragons are also sounding out 2010 premiership player Ben Hornby.<\/p>\n
