Phil Gould<\/a> has explained why he turned down the chance to perform a review into the Dragons<\/a>, claiming he predicted the sacking of former head coach Paul McGregor<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\ufeffMcGregor was sacked in August 2020 and was eventually replaced by Anthony Griffin<\/a>, who was given his own marching orders this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Following Griffin's ousting, McGregor opened up on the circumstances which led to his own exit from the Dragons, and Gould \ufeffsaid he was no stranger to the various problems at the club.<\/p>\n

"I spent a couple of days there, they wanted me to do a review a few years ago, and in the end I didn't do a review," he told Wide World of Sports' Six Tackles with Gus<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n

"I ended up refusing to do it and putting my name to it for various reasons, but I did speak at length with Ben Haran, Paul McGregor and the then-CEO Brian Johnston about what their challenges were and why I wasn't going to put my name to a review, because I didn't think they would make the changes that I would recommend.<\/p>\n

"I didn't think the review was going to be extensive enough. I felt that what they were asking me to do was to write a report to get past whatever they had to report to the board that year.<\/p>\n

"I said unless the review was going to go into this extent, unless you really want to do what needs to be done, I actually preempted what would happen the following year. I sat down and I said, 'After 10 rounds next year this is what it's going to look like unless you want to make these changes and do these things'."<\/p>\n

Gould also questioned why players had been forced to speak to the media on Tuesday before the club's higher-ups, saying it was a sign of poor management.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffYou don't want to comment on the way clubs \ufeffhandle their situation, but if you're going to make significant change like that then you've got to be upfront and face the media yourself," he said.<\/p>\n

"Whoever is responsible for the decision (should talk), the problem here is I don't know if there's any one person that's responsible for the decision.<\/p>\n

"There goes the whole argument about football clubs and the responsibility of the coach and whether the club is set up right for success or it's set up to make life difficult for the people that are trying to work there.<\/p>\n

"I'm not saying the Dragons are set up badly, I'm just saying it's difficult. They needed to make some changes and they didn't, and I think that cost Paul McGregor his job.<\/p>\n

"It's been one of the factors of why they've struggled since and that's without knowing what's happened since that time."<\/p>\n
