The Brisbane Tigers have launched an audacious bid to be the NRL<\/a>'s 18th team.<\/p>\n

The club – known as Easts Tigers until 2020 – \ufeffcalled a press conference for Wednesday at which the bid was announced.<\/p>\n

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'landys<\/a> has stated an 18th team is inevitable, after the Dolphins<\/a> brought the competition to 17 clubs this year.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe Dolphins have shocked the NRL by winning six of their first 10 games in the league, including beating the Roosters in round one.<\/p>\n

The Tigers think they can emulate that success if given a chance.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"South-east Queensland fans are craving more high-quality rugby league, with our four existing Queensland-based teams still leaving our fans wanting more," bid chairman Shane Edwards said.<\/p>\n

"Suncorp Stadium has the capacity to support another NRL team. This year's 27 rounds of the regular season will see nine weekends where no game is played at Lang Park (Suncorp Stadium).<\/p>\n

"With the strong attendance and audience figures we are seeing the Dolphins achieve in their debut year, we believe the Brisbane Tigers can provide a similar stimulus in the south-west corridor that takes in the Logan and Ipswich regions.<\/p>\n

"We will build upon our programs that already empower Queensland grassroots footy clubs and thousands of local players to dream big, and offer unique fan experiences with the game we love.<\/p>\n

"If successful in becoming the 18th NRL team, our goal is to be the go-to club for sports fans on Brisbane's southside and western corridor and the millions of casual fans between the ages of 18 to 34 who do not currently support the Broncos, Dolphins or Titans."<\/p>\n

The Tigers have a 90-year history but would reportedly be prepared to adopt a different moniker to avoid clashing with the Wests Tigers, already in the NRL.<\/p>\n

According to News Corp, they would also consider entering the NRL in partnership with a Pasifika bid.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe consortium behind the Brisbane Tigers' bid is the same which attempted to get the Firehawks the 17th NRL licence, which was beaten by the Dolphins.<\/p>\n
