The Wallaroos<\/a> have made history, announcing their youngest ever captain in 22-year-old flanker Piper Duck.<\/p>\n

On Monday, incumbent captain Shannon Parry announced her retirement from rugby union.<\/a><\/p>\n

She will play her final Test on Saturday when the Wallaroos face Fijiana at the Sydney Football Stadium.<\/p>\n

Duck will lead the Wallaroos for the first time in June when they face the Black Ferns in the O'Reilly Cup.<\/p>\n

It's been a meteoric rise for Duck, who made her Wallaroos debut only a year ago.<\/p>\n

Speaking on Nine's Today<\/em>, Duck said she was honoured to be given the nod.<\/p>\n

"Of course, it's obviously a nerve-wracking experience, but more than excited for the opportunity and very excited that Jay (Tregonning, Wallaroos coach) I suppose saw those leadership qualities in me," said Duck.<\/p>\n

"At the end of the day, it's not about me, it's about the girls. I just want to do the best I can for them."<\/p>\n

Duck hailed Parry's short but successful tenure at the helm of the Wallaroos that saw her take the team to the 2021 Rugby World Cup quarter final.<\/p>\n

"She's an exceptional woman the way she leads and plays and now going into coaching, I know she will be amazing at that too," said Duck.<\/p>\n

"The thing is, she will be in camp here to mentor me and I will be taking a lot of leadership skills and learnings off her. So very excited to have her in camp with me."<\/p>\n

At just 22 years old, Duck could conceivably contest two more Rugby World Cup campaigns.<\/p>\n

The first of those is in 2025 in England before the 2029 edition on home soil.<\/p>\n

Women's rugby enjoyed a sellout crowd in last year's World Cup final held in New Zealand.<\/p>\n

Scenes like those are encouraging for Duck, although she admits there's still a long way to go towards professionalism.<\/p>\n

"The game is progressing, which is so exciting to see, the new generation coming through," she explained.<\/p>\n

"I suppose the Wallaroos right now, that's what we're focusing on. You can't be what you can't see. We want to be that for the next generation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Right now, this year, for the first time, we had a push of making us fully professional, not quite there yet, but the contracts brought in were extremely positive.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I know us girls are really excited for the opportunity that brings."<\/p>\n

Saturday's clash between the Wallaroos and Fijiana will be broadcast free-to-air on 9Gem and ad-free via Stan Sport from 4:30pm.<\/p>\n
