Star Brisbane Broncos five-eighth Anthony Milford<\/a> is in doubt for the start of the 2021 season after scans today revealed he had broken a hand at training.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old suffered a displaced right transverse fourth metacarpal fracture on a training camp on the Sunshine Coast and is set to undergo surgery this week.<\/p>\n

Milford could miss Brisbane's round-one clash with the Parramatta Eels on March 12 if he takes the full six weeks to recover.<\/p>\n

The former Maroons playmaker is clearly even less likely to be fit for the Broncos' sole pre-season trial match against the North Queensland Cowboys in Brisbane on February 27.<\/p>\n

Broncos head of performance Anthony Croll gave details of Milford's setback in a club statement.<\/p>\n

"Anthony felt pain in his hand during a drill today and we sent him for scans," Croll said.<\/p>\n

"He has been reviewed by a surgeon and a hand therapist, and at this stage the best course of action is surgery to repair the fracture.<\/p>\n

"He will undergo surgery later this week, with a recovery time of 4-6 weeks."<\/p>\n

Milford will be crucial to the Broncos as they strive to recover from copping their first wooden spoon in history last season.<\/p>\n

The former Raider is likely to this year partner 19-year-old Tom Deardon in the halves but could also join forces with Brody Croft at times.<\/p>\n

Milford is among a host of Broncos players gunning for the club's captaincy, after new coach Kevin Walters declared the post open.<\/p>\n
