Red Bull<\/a> team principal Christian Horner<\/a> believes the Netflix documentary Drive to Survive<\/em> paints F1<\/a> as the "Kardashians on wheels".<\/p>\n

Now five seasons old, the series has seen the sport's popularity explode, with several races – including the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne in April – recording record crowds.<\/p>\n

Horner said while producers of the series took some liberties with the storylines, the series had been a "game-changer" for the sport, but admitted he didn't believe these new fans would continue to watch the sport should Netflix can the series.<\/p>\n

"They're making a TV show, so you know they'll create a narrative – sometimes you're the baddie, sometimes you're the hero, sometimes you're both in one episode," he told the Financial Times Future of the Car summit in London last week.<\/p>\n

"The effect it's had on the sport has just been insane. It's been an absolute game-changer \u2026 in bringing in an entirely new audience to watching Formula 1 racing.<\/p>\n

"We are now the Kardashians on wheels – you're just looking for (Haas team principal) Gunther Steiner to lose it, or for my friend Toto and I to have a little bit of jousting.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"But it gets you behind the scenes to know the personalities of the drivers a little more and to put faces and characters.<\/p>\n

"If you watch just a grand prix, you get the entertainment of that race, but you don't get that behind the scenes look into what goes on.<\/p>\n

"That's the dynamic that has completely changed, Formula 1 is to a degree a bit of a soap opera – the way it operates, the characters involved, the money involved, the politics.<\/p>\n

"There's so much going on in the sport outside of the cars driving around for two hours on a Sunday afternoon."<\/p>\n

Horner, who has been in the team principal role at Red Bull since it joined the sport in 2005, said the series would have been "x-rated" had it existed back then, and Drive to Survive<\/em> had not seen personnel develop an on-camera persona.<\/p>\n

"Gunter Steiner was always like that \u2026 people were [always] like that, you just didn't see it," he said.<\/p>\n

"So now you're starting to see the dynamics in teams, with with the drivers, the team principals, the engineers, these rivalries were always there.<\/p>\n

"When I started in the sport, there was Bernie Eccleston running it with Max Mosley, you had Ron Dennis running McLaren, Flavio Briatore at Renault and Jean Todt at Ferrari.<\/p>\n

"Christ if there had been Netflix around in those days, it would have definitely been x-rated."<\/p>\n
